Having played field hockey since fourth grade, Taylor was an all-state selection last year. Fellow senior Robyn Crowley, who scored the first goal of the match and took four shots, said she thinks her teammate will be selected again this year.

“Rose is very, very consistent,” said head coach Lauren Blanco. “She is very dependable. She is great on both sides of the ball, so she is our right mid and is equally great on offense attacking and she helps out a ton on defense. She’s one of our lowest body position players, which is one of the best things you can have going for you as a field player.

Taylor also plays soccer and energizes her teammates.

“She’s not super vocal but she definitely sparks our team just with her intensity and her drive and her effort on the field. It definitely gets people going and when Rose is on, the rest of our team is on.”

Goalkeeper Kathryn Thiese, who recorded eight saves, said Taylor’s second goal is what got the team excited.

“I mean, the first goal was great too, but the second goal just brought us into a great lead and it really got us going,” Thiese said. “She’s one of our captains. She definitely pumps us up before each game and is a great leader. … She really makes us enthusiastic and tells us to try our best.”

The Huskies (14-5) will play in the state semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday at New Trier; the state championship game is 2 p.m. Saturday.

Oak Park-River Forest is seeking its first state crown since 2003.

“Yes, we are very excited,” Taylor said. “Last year we didn’t make it to state. So this year we are very happy we made it.”

HINSDALE — On the same day Hinsdale Central’s girls tennis team was crowned state champion, the boys soccer squad collected some hardware of its own.

The Red Devils won their own Class 3A regional final Saturday by beating Young 3-1. It was the latest achievement for a team which had secured its third straight West Suburban Silver title. The Devils led wire to wire, riding the efforts of senior midfielder Jack Baderman (5-7, 140), who had two goals and an assist.

For much of the first half, Hinsdale Central controlled the ball but had no success getting the ball past Young goalkeeper Jesus Velasco. Finally, with 16:59 left in the half, the lefty shooting Baderman struck to the upper right corner to snap the scoreless deadlock.

“We always come out and we try to put pressure on as soon as we can,” Baderman said. “We had a couple chances in the first couple minutes, couldn’t really execute, but we just kept going at them.”

Baderman’s next act was setting up an insurance goal. With 12:53 remaining in the half, he struck a corner kick that senior defender Will McGowen converted for a two-goal cushion.

However, Young would not go down easy. In the second half, the Devils were called for a handball in the box and senior midfielder Jaime Alonso converted the penalty kick past a diving Wes Bergevin.

“After they scored the PK, it kind of put us back a little bit,” Bergevin said. “It was definitely a good shot.”

Young put Liam McDonald in the nets after intermission for Velasco and he denied Red Devil shooters on multiple occasions.

But Baderman scored again with 15:15 remaining, finding the bottom right corner. Young went without a serious threat the rest of the way.

“[Baderman’s] come up big in some pretty big moments for sure,” Wiggins said. “For him to set the tone tonight, start it and finish it off, that was exciting to see for him. He’s certainly playing at a high level right now.”

Hinsdale Central sophomore midfielder Jeremy Yi left in the second half after suffering a cut on his forehead during a collision going for a head ball.

Hinsdale Central will meet Lyons at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Western Springs in the sectional semifinals.

NORTHLAKE — On Leyden’s senior night, the memories began to build on the very first play from scrimmage.

Josh Padilla (5-11, 210), who has autism, entered Friday’s game following the opening kickoff. On the first snap, senior quarterback Tom Pajor underhanded the ball to Padilla and in a matter of seconds, he ran the length of the field to the end zone, with Proviso East’s cooperation.

While it was the first touchdown of his high school career, the score did not count. But his moment brought an ovation from the crowd and a rush of teammates for a celebration that proved to be a fitting start to Leyden’s 49-9 win in the West Suburban Gold.

“It was pretty emotional,” athletic director Randy Conrad said. “In sports, everybody thinks that it’s about the wins and losses … but I think these types of moments is what people are going to remember the rest of their lives.”

Later in the third quarter, Pajor approached Padilla on the sideline.

“I just told him I loved him and I wanted him to score a touchdown,” Pajor said.

Coach Tom Cerasani wasn’t sure beforehand how well the play would be executed.

“I didn’t know what he was going to do when he got the ball tonight,” Cerasani said. “I asked him before the game if he was going to score a touchdown. He said, ‘Yes,’ and he did. It was great.”

While Leyden (2-7, 2-4) and Proviso West (1-8, 0-6) struggled this season, the Eagles were able to put a stamp on the school record book.

With 3:37 left in the third quarter, Pajor found receiver Alex Lemon to his right, and he took the pass for a 32-yard score. With that play, Pajor became the career passing leader for the Eagles, finishing with 2,304 yards. Lemon’s catch also gave him the school’s all-time mark for receiving yards.

“Honestly, I didn’t even know I was about to break the record,” Lemon said. “I was happy.”

Pajor had faith that he would make history in the final game in an Eagles’ uniform.

ELMWOOD PARK — After a last-minute loss to Chicago Christian in Week 7, Elmwood Park coaches turned the reins over to sophomore Brandon Romero.

The result was three rushing touchdowns by the quarterback for a 35-14 win over Walther Christian in the Metro Suburban East. In the process, Elmwood Park (2-6, 1-3) ended a six-game losing skid while the Broncos (0-8, 0-5) still are looking for their first victory.

Romero, the 5-10, 176 pound quarterback, guided the way.

“I just thought that was motivation for me,” Romero said. “He [coach John Freeman] told me I was starting this week. … I work hard during practice and so does the rest of the team. They work their butt off. I believe I just show that leadership. Leadership is just what perseveres me all the time.”

The Tigers didn’t start great. Dominic Cadetto fumbled while returning the opening kick and the Broncos recovered. Walther Christian capitalized with a 13-yard rushing touchdown by Corey Pugh.

On the very next drive, Elmwood Park was able to take advantage of multiple penalties by Walther. Cadetto redeemed himself with a 13-yard TD of his own. Then Romero scored on a 6-yard keeper to make it 14-6 Elmwood Park.

A second-quarter fumble by Romero set up Jaylen Pugh for a 4-yard TD run before the half and following a two-point conversion pass to Kevin Smith, the teams looked to be heading into the locker room tied.

At that point, Romero displayed his leadership that earned him the varsity start.

His second touchdown keeper of the night with 1:25 left sent the Tigers into halftime with the lead.

“Our athletic director [Douglas Noyes] always tells us to have a short memory,” Romero said. “So once that play happens, once you hit the sideline, it’s over. … You go out there, you get on the field and you just play.”

The Tigers would then distance themselves in the second half. Romero ran in another keeper in the third quarter and Moscatello returned a punt 21 yards to cap the scoring.

Cadetto was happy with Romero’s performance.

“He’s one of my best friends and I’m very proud of him,” Cadetto said.

Romero would finish 5-for-9 for 118 yards passing and had 42 yards on 12 carries. Freeman called it a coach’s decision to start him over Jason Polito-Carlson, who entered the game in the fourth quarter.

“He’s a sophomore. Each week, he’s gotten a little better,” Freeman said. “He threw the ball pretty well tonight.”

PALOS HEIGHTS — With 6:56 remaining in the third quarter, Elmwood Park junior Frankie Verna was playing defense against Chicago Christian, when an injury put him out of commission.

The Tigers wound up losing on a late touchdown to the Knights 38-34 on Friday in a Metro Suburban East showdown.

A coincidence?

“Frankie’s a big part of what we do,” said Elmwood Park coordinator of football operations Tony Sylvester. “He’s been a leader for the last three years for us here and we’re counting on him for big things and it was just really tough to see him go down, especially in such a close game with the game on the line. We’d love to have him out there, and he would’ve been out there if he could have.”

Standing 6-2, 182 pounds, the tight end/defensive tackle has been playing football since he was in fifth grade.

“I was always watching and I grew up in an Italian family … my parents finally let me play,” Verna said before the game. “They just always saw the concussion stuff and they were worried about it, but I promised to stay safe, and if anything ever happened, I would make sure I told an adult.”

Though Verna’s not a captain, if something goes wrong, he’s usually one of the first ones to speak up. Verna says he would tell a teammate what he is doing wrong to ensure things run smoothly. In addition, he also helps direct team warmups.

Verna got a taste of the varsity level as a sophomore. That’s valuable on a team short on experience.

“I was starting tight end, but then I got taken back down to sophomore level at the end of the season,” he said. “One of the players got hurt, he hurt his back. They moved me up to play his position.”

Verna also plays rugby and has been involved in the school’s Operation Snowball, an alcohol and drug prevention program, since his freshman year.

“I just thought it was a good thing to do,” Verna said. “I thought maybe I could help just a little, help the community a little bit more.”

There are a lot of things Verna brings to the table that Elmwood Park coach John Freeman is happy to have for another year.

“He’s always focused and ready to go. It’s great to have high-energy kids like that,” Freeman said. “He’s a good kid on and off the field. We’re looking for huge things from him next year as a senior. He’s a real coachable kid and just wants to get on the field and play hard.”

MELROSE PARK — Guerin may have found a quarterback Saturday during its wire to wire 34-14 Metro Suburban East win over Walther Christian.

Sophomore quarterback Richie Zacharias, playing with a fever, snuck in for a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down and found junior wideout Keith Franklin (6-4, 190) twice for touchdowns to lift the Gators to the victory.

Not everything went well for the young QB, as the Broncos sacked Zacharias twice and also intercepted him two times, including once that resulted in an 85-yard TD return by junior Corey Pugh. He would later add another pick of Zacharias in the fourth quarter.

“Yeah, I wasn’t feeling too well, but if you’re sick, you got to keep on going,” Zacharias said. “We got the win and that’s all that matters. … I don’t blame me being sick for anything. If I have to play being sick, that’s on me. I have to keep going and try my hardest.”

The TD strikes to Franklin went for 29 and 16 yards, respectively. Franklin actually set up his first score. Kevin Smith dropped back to punt for the Broncos (0-7, 0-4) and Franklin blocked the kick after a high snap. The Gators (3-4, 2-1) took advantage and would go into halftime with a 27-8 lead.

‘

“We just set up a game plan in practice to block the punt,” Franklin said.

Guerin coach Glen Kozlowski is high on Franklin’s abilities.

“Keith is a great player and he’s only going to get better,” Kozlowski said. “He’s a junior that has a lot of upside, so we’re excited to have him here.”

Guerin’s lone score in the second half came with 8:07 left, when Julio Roldan raced 25 yards to the end zone.

With this win, Guerin kept its playoff hopes alive. It heads to Ridgewood on Friday in a do-or-die situation for both teams.

“Ridgewood is the same as us,” Kozlowski said. “We kind of like it right now. We’re a little better with our backs against the wall. At this time of year, we’re all in the same boat. Ridgewood’s in the same boat, too. So it’ll be a great game for both teams.”

PALOS HEIGHTS — Friday was senior night at Chicago Christian, and one senior’s armor shined bright for the Knights against Elmwood Park.

As if scoring six touchdowns, including the game-winner, wasn’t enough for Colby Roundtree, the 5-7, 165-pounder also collected the game-ending interception to seal Chicago Christian’s Metro Suburban East win over Elmwood Park, 38-34.

Roundtree wasted no time starting his personal highlight film. The senior fumbled the opening kickoff, but finally found the handle and returned it for a touchdown.

“That was crazy,” Roundtree said. “I’m really proud of Luke Boss, Stephen Gallagher — basically everyone on the kickoff made key blocks on that play to open it up for me.”

The Tigers showed some fight, however, and twice took the lead. In the second quarter, Elmwood Park kicker Timothy Davis missed on a 23-yard field goal but Chicago Christian was whistled for running into the kicker. Looking at fourth-and-goal at the 3, quarterback Jason Polito-Carlson tucked it into the end zone and the extra point gave the Tigers a 14-13 advantage.

The Tigers (1-6, 0-3) then led 32-31 late in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard keeper by Polito-Carlson. He also ran in the conversion to post the visitors to a three-point cushion with about five minutes remaining.

However, with the help of Elmwood Park penalties, Roundtree had one more TD in him.

The Knights (3-4, 2-1) marched to inside the 20 when the Tigers’ defense committed a facemask violation. Then, with third-and-9 at the 19, a horse collar tackle breathed new life into the Knights. Roundtree burst in with the winning TD with 34.5 seconds remaining.

“Colby is awesome,” coach Jim Bolhuis said.

“That’s just what you expect from him,” senior quarterback Christian Bolhuis said. “He had a great night and it’s a great way to end his home career.”

LOMBARD — For the previous two weeks, St. Joseph gave up a combined 90 points.

The Chargers on Friday surrendered 42 points to Montini (4-2) in the first half alone.

St. Joe’s rushing defense didn’t seem to have an answer for sophomore running back Prince Walker. The Bronco ball carrier got it going with an 18-yard touchdown run on Friday, paving the way to a 49-7 nonconference rout. Walker was at it again later in the first quarter with a 15-yard TD run that pushed the Broncos ahead 21-0.

Montini senior quarterback Charles Norgle picked apart the Chargers defense. He passed for four TDs in the first half. He tossed a 28-yard scoring strike to junior Justin Blake, then senior Leon Thornton hauled in a 25-yard TD pass with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Norgle would continue to have his way with St. Joseph (2-4) with a 34-yard bomb to junior Tyler Millikan. The Broncos quarterback finished the half with 10 completions for 181 yards.

The Chargers struggled on offense, as well, and went the entire first half without recording a first down. Sophomore tailback Armone Elem tried to spin, cut and run his way to get something going for the Chargers. He managed 28 yards on 14 carries in the first half.

The second half was much more contained. The only Broncos’ score came on a 40-yard spurt by Blake, who took over for Norgle at quarterback, to cap Montini’s scoring with 9:22 left.

St. Joseph adverted the shutout after Elem exploded for 79 yards down to the Montini 1-yard line.

“My line made some great blocks and I got an open field,” Elem said. “That was my linemen.”

Elem’s burst set up a bootleg around the left side into the end zone by senior quarterback Elijah Davis, who appreciated Elem’s effort.

“If it wasn’t for him and that long run, I wouldn’t have scored,” Davis said. “I tip my hat off to him. He played a great game, we all played a great game as a team. It was a tough loss but we just got to go to practice and regroup.”

St. Joseph head coach Anthony Griffin had high praise for Elem’s accomplishments.

“The kid’s a talented, young player,” Griffin said. “We think that he’s one of the best running backs in the area. He should get a ton of Division I looks because he’s a gamer. He’s an athlete, he makes phenomenal plays. No matter who the opponent is, he works hard and we’re happy to have him.”

The Chargers have another rugged Catholic League crossover opponent next week in St. Rita and Griffin’s expectations are set.

“Come out and compete,” he said. “Have fun and compete and do the best we can.”

This story has been changed to reflect the following correction:

The Montini quarterback’s last name was misspelled. He is Charles Norgle, not Nogle.

DOWNERS GROVE — With a 10-0 lead in the fourth quarter on Friday, it looked like Leyden would secure its first victory of the season. However, 14 unanswered points by Downers South (3-2, 2-1) secured the 14-10 home victory and dashed the Eagles’ hopes in the West Suburban Gold matchup.“It was a tough one,” Leyden coach Tom Cerasani said. “I thought the kids played extremely hard. I thought we played well offensively and defensively … too many penalties.”Indeed, the Eagles (0-5, 0-2) racked up penalty flags when they were marching to pad their 10-0 lead. At one point, it was third-and-41 for Leyden. One penalty wiped out what would’ve been a touchdown by senior John Robles.“We’ve got to put it in the end zone when we get inside the 10-yard line,” Cerasani said.Leyden junior Kevin Vargas made big contributions in the loss. He sacked the quarterback on fourth down in the first quarter and recovered a fumble in the third quarter. In addition, Vargas nailed a 45-yard field goal in the third quarter that made it 10-0.“We’ve been practicing on special teams a lot; we’ve been practicing on field goals a lot,” Vargas said. “We expect to make all of those, but obviously, we didn’t finish it. … We just got to keep believing.”The Eagles took a 7-0 lead into halftime. Senior quarterback Tom Pajor rolled to his right and found Alex Lemon. Junior David Demarais ran to the 7-yard line on the next play, then bolted five yards into the end zone with 1:08 remaining in the half for the first points of the night. The Mustangs’ offense came alive in the fourth quarter. With 11:32 left, Jacob Baker ran 28 yards to the goal line to put Downers South on the board. After a series of Eagles penalties, the Mustangs got the ball back and Baker again applied the finishing touches on a 10-yard run.On the final drive, it was fourth-and-2 for Leyden at midfield when the Mustangs bottled up the Eagles’ ball carrier and ran out the clock.“We knew we had to score,” Pajor said. “We wanted to march down the field and score right here. Beating DGS would be big for us and give us a huge confidence boost.”Leyden’s continues action on Friday at Hinsdale South.“We got to keep our heads up,” Vargas said. “It’s been a tough season, but we got to keep going.”
