The balance of football power in the Village of Grayslake swings like a pendulum. From 2008-2011, it was Grayslake Central High School that won four straight games over crosstown rival Grayslake North.

But now, the pendulum has swung the other way, and in the case of Friday’s ninth meeting, it has swung way the other way.

Visiting North scored eight first-half touchdowns and Central had four first-half turnovers as the Knights built a 55-0 halftime lead and went on to post a 61-13 victory in a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division game.

The winners (5-3, 4-1) are now eligible for the playoffs for the third straight year. Central is 0-8 under first year coach Jason Schall.

As is the case every week for North, senior running back Titus Booker led the way. He carried 13 times for 145 yards and scored on runs of 27, 16, 25 and 18 yards.

North’s other points came on a 17-yard run by QB Merrick Gentile, a 53-yard pass from Gentile (7-of-9, 134 yards) to Brad Baker, a 25-yard pick six by sophomore Dami Oladunmoye, a 1-yard run by Oladunmoye, and a 4-yard run by Joe Gary.

Central’s TDs came on a 29-yard pass from Luke Shepherd to Mitchell Gilbert and a 14-yard run by Kevin Dunk.

“We came out and played pretty well,” said North coach Steve Wood. “Central held Booker to a couple yards early, but then he got going and the pick-six kind of blew things open.”

Next up for the Knights is a key league game with Woodstock North. Both teams are 4-1 in the division.

“We control our own destiny,” said Wood, “but they are saying the same thing. They’re a pretty good team, they’re hungry and they need to win to have a chance (to make the playoffs).

Woodstock North is 4-4 after its Friday loss to Prairie Ridge and must beat Grayslake North to be eligible for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Booker is excited about the chance to beat Woodstock North and share the division title with Prairie Ridge — a team the Knights beat this season.

“I think we’re peaking at the right time,” Booker said. “I’m excited to go into next week and play Woodstock North. We’ve been focused in practice and I think that will continue, especially since we’re working toward making the playoffs.”

Next February 7, Zion-Benton High School fans will get an up-close look at what the state’s best boys basketball team looks like when Stevenson visits the Bee Hive.

Friday night, those same Z-B fans got an equally up-close look at what the state’s best football team looks like … and darned if it wasn’t Stevenson again.

What are the chances of that happening in the same school year?

Certainly better than the chance Zion’s football team (3-4, 1-3) had of upsetting the Patriots (7-0, 4-0). The result was never in doubt as the Patriots rolled to a 34-0 halftime lead and finished with a 41-0 North Suburban Conference Lake Division victory.

Stevenson scored straight out on four of its first-half possessions. On the fifth, it had to punt, but Zion-Benton’s returner muffed the catch, and Stevenson recovered and drove for a score.

Jack Joseph (17 carries, 177 yards) had TD runs of 46, 11 and 10 yards in the first half and scored from the 7 in the third period to kick the game into running-clock mode. Tyler Vincent scored from the 1, and QB Willie Bourbon (7-of-10, 103 yards) passed 14 yards for a TD to Henry Marchese.

Meanwhile, Zion quarterback Doug Gates was 10-of-16 passing for 91 yards and one interception. The Bees’ rushing yards were negligible.

“Nice win for us,” said Stevenson coach Bill McNamara. “Zion is always a tough place to play. You’ve got to come out sharp, and our kids came out sharp tonight.”

Stevenson’s defense has been dominant all fall, but the offense was equally as impressive on this night.

“One of our goals for tonight was to start hot and stay hot,” McNamara added. “Our kids came out ready to play tonight, which was a tribute to their preparation and the respect that they have for Zion.”

The hottest Patriot was Joseph, a 5-11, 195-pound senior.

“Our offensive line made it work for me tonight,” Joseph said. “We have to come out hard like this every game. It all started in practice this week, and we just have to keep it going and keep coming out hot.”

Next Friday, Stevenson will celebrate homecoming against winless Mundelein. Zion-Benton will face Lake Forest.

The competitive bar is about to be raised about a half-dozen notches for Zion-Benton High School’s football team.

What Zee-Bee players, coaches and fans will find out in the next five weeks is if the team’s level of play rises to clear that bar.

Friday night’s 56-7 nonconference victory over host Round Lake gave Zion a 3-1 record, with five wins needed to be eligible for playoff consideration.

But the road to those two coveted wins goes through — in order: Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Stevenson, Lake Forest, and Warren — and the level of play that got Zion three early-season wins won’t be good enough to get Nos. 4 and 5 against such elite-level competition.

So, do the Zee-Bees have room for improvement?

First-year coach Bob Moynihan — the most enthusiastic coach in this corner of the state — believes another level is there for his team to move up.

“We keep getting better every week. A lot of it is the discipline aspect of the game,” Moynihan said. “If we have the proper discipline, eliminate the minor mistakes, and play the way we’re supposed to, we can play with anyone.

“We have the talent,” the coach added. “We just need to get better every day.”

One player who is getting better every time out is senior quarterback Doug Gates. He rushed 14 times for 136 yards and two TDs against Round Lake (1-3), and also completed 8-of-16 passes for 136 yards and two scores — both to speedy Jonathan Roberts.

But even with the improvement, Zion started out moving 10 yards forward, and then five or 15 back because of penalties.

“We started slow. We had way too many penalties,” Gates said. “After that (start), we had a good game. We just have to build off of that.”

Gates is in lockstep with his coach in terms of knowing Zion has talented players, but they don’t play disciplined football the way they do at every school left on the Z-B schedule.

“We have to be disciplined,” Gates said. “The talent is there. We just have to stay disciplined to win games.”

Friday’s game was 21-0 at halftime.

The second-half oddity involved Z-B scoring three TDs in 53 seconds. Roberts caught a 39-yard TD pass from Gates with 1:42 left in the third quarter. On the first play after the kickoff, Kyree McLean of Zion picked off a pass and went 26 yards to the end zone. Then, on the first play after the next kickoff, DeVaughn Miller scooped up a fumble when the snap went over the Round Lake QB’s head while in shotgun formation and Miller took i 15 yards to the end zone with 49 seconds still on the clock.

No Zion-Benton team has won more than three games in a season since 2003, when Gary Bereiter coached the Bees into the playoffs.

As for Round Lake, the Panthers’ star was running back Chris Perry. He carried 10 times for 87 yards and caught a 44-yard TD pass from Ron Steadman. Cole Steger started the game at quarterback, but went out with an injury in the second quarter.

This is what they mean when they say that on such-and-such a night, player so-and-so literally could do no wrong.

Because even when Antioch junior running back Griffin Hill looked like he was doing something wrong during Friday’s North Suburban Prairie opener against visiting Round Lake, it all turned out just right for the Sequoits.

The result was a 46-0 halftime lead for Antioch, which went on to earn a 53-0 victory in a game that featured a running clock for the entire second half.

Here’s what Hill did in the first 24 minutes: He carried the ball 12 times for 195 yards and scored on runs of 43, 44, three and 15 yards.

That was Hill when he was right. The one time he was wrong, he fumbled at the end of a 40-yard run to the Round Lake 5-yard line with 49 seconds left in the first half. But the fumble was picked up by teammate Weston Fox, who covered the remaining distance for the touchdown that kicked the game into running-clock mode.

Antioch’s second-half points came on Nick Dorosan three-yard run with 2:24 remaining.

“It all worked well for us,” Hill said. “It was a good game for us, obviously. Our goal for today was to make a statement and get our first conference win. But we need to continue to make statements so that the next team we play in the conference knows we’re coming.”

That will be Vernon Hills next Friday night. The Cougars, like Antioch, are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the division.

Antioch coach Brian Glashagel was thrilled with his team’s execution.

“Sometimes, you let teams like this hang around, but we didn’t do that,” the coach said.

Round Lake (1-2) opened its season with a win, but trailed 57-6 at halftime last week against Chicago Catholic League power DeLaSalle.

“Next, we’ve got to go down to Vernon Hills. Year in and year out, us and Vernon Hills play some really tough games. Even when they’re loaded or we’re loaded, it always turns out to be a very good game.

“It’s going to be a playoff-type deal, and we want to take command of the division,” Glashagel added. “We’re coming down to the meat-and-potatoes of the schedule. Week in and week out, it’s going to be a battle.”

Besides Hill, also running well for Antioch were Jacob Lannahan (6 carries, 77 yards) and Alan Taylor (9-59).

Next week, Round Lake will be home against Zion-Benton on Friday night. The Panthers played without starting quarterback Cole Steger, who was injured in last week’s game.

Six-time defending state team champion Montini and Class 2A newcomer Harvard advanced to the quarterfinals of the IHSA’s team wrestling tournament with dominating victories on Tuesday night at the Antioch Sectional.

Montini crushed Westinghouse 60-12 on one mat, while Harvard was dominating Lakes 57-12 on the other.

Montini and Harvard will compete in Bloomington on Saturday in the Class 2A quarterfinals, but won’t be wrestling against each other.

In Montini’s win, the Broncos won five matches by pin — Chris Garcia (152 pounds), Luke Furtuna (160), Xavier Montalbo (182), Derrick Curry (195) and Michael Johnson (Hwt.) — three by decision, and two by forfeit.

Johnson’s match was the last of the evening, as both teams forfeited at 106 and 113, and Montini forfeited at 120 and 126.

“We’re just excited to keep this ball rolling,” said Montini coach Israel Martinez. “We’ve got five days left in our season and the boys see the light at the end of the tunnel; they’re excited.

“It was a good night to get out and do a little bit of wrestling. I’m always excited at this point of the season. If we win, it will be seven state titles in a row.”

Equally excited was Harvard coach Tim Haak, whose team has been a player in Class 1A wrestling for decades, but was moved up to Class 2A for this season and hasn’t missed a beat.

“I thought our guys came to wrestle,” he said. “I thought our guys came and competed well.”

As for moving up from 1A to 2A, Haak said it’s a non-issue.

“We never really talked about it. We can only control the things we can control — our work ethic, our attitude, and those types of things. We don’t control where the (enrollment) cutoff is. We’ve mostly wrestled 2A and 3A schools during the season, so I don’t see a real difference.”

The match started at 132, where Sergio Jimenez’s victory put the Hornets ahead for good.

Winning by pinfall for Harvard were Logan Streit (138), Max Wheeler (160), Marcos Tapia (182) and Zach Martin (195), with Martin winning in 38 seconds. There were two wins by decision and four wins by forfeit.

Lakes’ wins were by Max Hill (152), Zach Fuller (170) and Austin Summers (220).

Summers’ match was the final one contested, as Lakes forfeited at heavyweight, 106, 113 and 120. At 126, there was a double forfeit.

Visiting Hampshire scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and five of six in the first half and went on to drub Grayslake Central 46-20 on Friday in the Fox Valley Fox opener for both teams.

The Whip-Purs (2-1) piled up more than 300 yards of offense in the first two quarters, led by quarterback Kyle Anderson and running back Phillip LaPointe.

Anderson had seven carries for 91 yards and two TDs in the half, while LaPointe carried nine times for 104 yards and a score. Anderson also completed 3-of-4 passes, good for 85 yards — 58 on a stunning TD strike to Patrick Kuefner following the opening kickoff.

“I was happy with the we approached the first half,” said Hampshire coach Dan Cavanaugh of his team’s 32-7 lead. “We lost a little focus in the second half, and Grayslake played well in the second half, but I was really happy with how we played the first half both offensively and defensively.”

Grayslake Central answered that TD with a 2-yard run by Tyler Gustke, but from there, it was all Whip-Purs.

LaPointe’s 3-yard TD run and Anderson’s 37-yard TD burst made it 20-7 after one quarter, and Anderson and Tyler Crater scored in the second period.

In the second half, Hampshire added TDs by Kuefner on a 75-yard from Anderson and Kuefner tallied on a 62-yard run.

Grayslake Central scored on a 62-yard pass from Alex Lennartz to Casey Adams and on a 62-yard run by Adams.

For the game, Lennartz was 3-of-12 passing for 98 yards, one TD and one interception.

Adams rushed for 72 yards and caught the one TD pass.

For Hampshire, Anderson finished 4-of-6 passing for 160 yards and two TDs. He also rushed 11 times for 92 yards.

LaPointe carried 18 times for 134 yards and a score. As a team, the Whip-Purs rushed for 387 yards, with Crater carrying 16 times for 80 yards.

Hampshire’s ground game just chewed up Grayslake’s defensive front seven.

“We executed well and I thought our guys did a real nice job,” Cavanaugh said. “I’d like to see the stats. It’s nice to see our running game really get going.”

Host Grayslake North clinched a tie for its first-ever Fox Valley Fox conference football title and won its seventh straight game by throttling crosstown rival Grayslake Central 49-7 on Friday night.

The Knights (7-1, 5-0) will be the outright champs if they beat Woodstock North next week.

Grayslake Central (2-6, 1-5) did not surrender without a fight.

On the game’s first possession, the Rams’ Natori Galmore raced 74 yards for a touchdown to give his team a 7-0 lead. But by halftime, North was in control at 21-7 as Anthony Diggs scored on a 19-yard pass from A.J. Fish. Fish ran six yards for a score and Titus Booker ran three yards for a score in the final minute.

In the second half, it was all Fish. The senior, who will play lacrosse next year at the University of Virginia, scored on runs of 2 and 44 yards, and threw touchdown passes of 43 yards (to Vincent Smith) and 19 yards (to Charlie Pine) to complete the scoring.

For the game, Fish rushed 17 times for 152 yards and three touchdowns.

Fish completed 13-of-17 passes for 216 yards and three scores. His final touchdown pass moved the game into running-clock mode.

This is the first Grayslake North team to win more than five games in a season.

“We had a slow start, but a fast finish,” said Knights coach Steve Wood. “We may have been a little overconfident, but I’m happy with the way we responded and rebounded.

“In the second half, we were pretty much able to move the ball at will, and I think our defense played well in the second half.”

THE SKINNY

Needing to run the table in the season’s final three weeks to be playoff-eligible, the Sequoits (3-4, 3-1 North Suburban Prairie) got the first one, knocking off the visiting Bulldogs (4-3, 2-3) behind the play of QB Zach Andre and wideout v.

TURNING POINT

After Wauconda pulled within 20-17 on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Malisheski to Josh Anderson in the fourth quarter, Antioch responded with a four-play, 74-yard TD drive of its own. Lanahan got the points on a 36-yard pass from Andre, but the key play was a 43-yard run by Andre on a QB keeper.

THE STAR

In the second half, Lanahan touched the ball only twice, but took took it to the house both times. On the first, he ran 42 yards on a reverse in the third quarter to give his team a 20-3 lead. Then, when it was 20-17, he caught the game-deciding TD pass with 6:03 left.

BY THE NUMBERS

For Antioch, Andre was 3 of 7 passing for 68 yards and two scores. He also ran 13 times for 60 yards. Cameron Corey had 17 carries for 120 yards. For Wauconda, Malisheski was 9 of 26 passing for 141 yards, two scores and interceptions. Alex Payne carried the ball 15 times for 49 yards.

QUOTABLE

“I like that the kids battled hard. We told them they had to go and take this game, and that’s what they did. They battled through a lot of adversity and that’s what we like to see. We had a couple of big plays, and that’s what it comes down to in a game like this.” — Antioch coach Brian Glashagel

THE SKINNY

Playoff-bound Warren (6-2) scored 41 points in the first quarter and hit the 50-point mark for the third time this season, crushing visiting Mundelein (1-7) in a North Suburban Lake game. The win was No. 108 for Blue Devils coach Dave Mohapp, making him the winningest coach in school history.

TURNING POINT

In the first 1:14 of the game, Warren’s Zack Rappel returned the opening kickoff 71 yards to the Mustang 14, and on the next play, Daniel Rockingham caught a 14-yard TD pass from Andrew Nickell. On Mundelein’s first play after the ensuing kickoff, it fumbled the ball away, and that led to Max Sorby’s one-yard TD run and a 14-0 lead after 74 seconds.

THE STAR

Senior return man Rappel had a monster game. In addition to the 71-yard return with the opening kickoff, he also returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown that made it 28-0 eight minutes into the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

Warren found the end zone six times in the first quarter. Mixed in there were three TD passes by Nickell (5-for-8, 86 yards in one quarter), plus three Mustang turnovers (fumble, pick-six by Nick Kokotas and botched kickoff return in which no Mustang covered the ball at their own 25).

QUOTABLE

“We wanted to get a fast start tonight and we were able to do that. We were clicking in all areas tonight — offensively, defensively and special teams. Over the last couple weeks, we have not been consistent, but with tonight’s game, it looks like we’re heading in the right direction.” — Mohapp
