Chicago native and fan favorite Katie Kadan came in third place on the season finale of “The Voice” on Tuesday.

Upon the announcement of Kadan as the second runner-up, audible gasps and other sounds of surprise could be heard from the audience.

Kadan’s coach John Legend appeared visibly surprised at the outcome as well, with host Carson Daly commenting, “A lot of surprise here.”

“You are a brilliant man and, more than that, your kindness and encouragement has made me believe in myself more than ever,” Kadan said to Legend before the results were announced.

Jake Hoot, a 33-year-old Cookeville, Tennessee, native, emerged victorious, garnering coach Kelly Clarkson her third win.

Hoot is notable for being a “one-chair turn,” meaning only Clarkson expressed interest in having him on her team during his first audition.

In second place was 29-year-old Ricky Duran, a member of Blake Shelton’s team from Worcester, Massachusetts. Rose Short from Killeen, Texas, the last contestant standing on Gwen Stefani’s team, landed in fourth.

Chicago native Kadan emerged as an early frontrunner in the competition, with her audition of Aretha Franklin’s “Baby I Love You” causing all four judges to spin their chairs and fight for Kadan to have a spot on their teams. She eventually chose Legend, who mentored last season’s winner, Maelyn Jarmon.

During the second half of the Season 17 finale, Kadan sang a duet with Adam Lambert, a piano ballad version of Cher’s “Believe.”

Earlier she performed Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing,” a new original track entitled “All Better,” and a duet of “Merry Christmas Baby” with Legend.

“Every single time, you never let us down,” said Legend after her performance of “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” “Not only did you never let us down, you just dazzled us every single time [this season].”

Kadan began singing in choirs at a young age but didn’t begin performing in clubs until the age of 30.

According to her contestant bio, a lack of confidence prevented Kadan from singing in front of an audience. After receiving an overwhelmingly positive response at an open mic, she was encouraged regularly to pursue gigs.

“Working with John, I’ve learned to be even more confident, to trust myself,” Kadan said in a recorded segment during Monday’s broadcast.

Kadan also worked as a vocal coach at School of Rock Chicago, a performance-based music education program.

This season’s finale marked the first time in seven seasons that each coach had a contestant in the finals.

Sunday night at the United Center, where Celine Dion arrived as part of her Courage World Tour — her first road trek in over 10 years — the pop superstar proved herself both a classic diva and an idiosyncratic stage presence.

Dion has spent much of the past decade in Las Vegas as part of a residency which ended earlier this year. During the evening’s set, she playfully referenced the large gap in touring.

“I escaped [from Las Vegas],” she joked at one point.

The show was set to start at 7:30 p.m., but in true diva fashion, Dion kept the audience waiting, taking the stage more than 45 minutes later. By the time she made her entrance — ascending atop a riser that emerged from beneath the stage — while singing the opening notes to “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” the audience eagerly forgave her tardiness, hanging on to every word.

Dion spent much of the night singing her biggest hits such as “That’s The Way It Is,” “The Power of Love,” and “To Love You More.” The audience sang along with enthusiasm, with Dion incorporating her classic vocal gymnastics into every lyric.

One highlight came during a performance of “Love Can Move Mountains,” with Dion’s backing band and vocalists turning the standard pop number into a soulful, upbeat romp.

Another came during “All By Myself,” with Dion singing the climactic final chorus a cappella, her voice filling the stadium. This prompted a massive reaction from the audience, who were in awe of Dion’s raw vocal delivery.

Dion’s skill as a live vocalist exceeded expectations. Her voice — while polarizing to some — is in excellent condition, with seemingly effortless high belts and endless vocal runs punctuating the set list. In a particularly impressive series of runs during “Because You Loved Me,” Dion sarcastically remarked to the audience that “it [wasn’t] that hard.”

True to form, her quirky and sometimes bizarre sense of humor shone brightly throughout the night. At one point, Dion repeatedly sang “Chi-town like a diamond” to the tune of Rihanna’s hit song “Diamonds.” Moments like these — including one where she fist-bumped a guitar player, and a series of confusing jokes about leftover Thanksgiving food — helped showcase a looser side of Dion.

Amid the hits, Dion delivered two songs from her latest album, “Courage.” Her performance of the titular track — inspired by the death of Dion’s husband and business manager René Angélil — was an emotional high point. The audience remained silent throughout the song, letting Dion’s voice speak for itself.

Toward the end of the night, Dion emerged in a silver sequined jumpsuit — one of five outfits worn throughout the concert — and performed a medley of covers, including David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” and LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” among others; she performed the latter in her native French. While Dion certainly did not reestablish herself as a disco diva with the medley, the songs were a nice change of pace from the evening’s many ballads, and her slightly awkward dance moves were charming in their own right.

Dion finished the night with a two-song encore, including perhaps her most famous hit, “My Heart Will Go On,” from the film “Titanic.” It was well worth the wait, with her voice sounding just as good as it did on the initial recording more than 20 years ago.

Following that explosive performance, Dion revealed she had one more song left, breaking into a cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” It was the most subdued portion of the concert, with only Dion’s vocals and a lone piano filling the stadium. It was a tender, sincere ending to a show focused largely on theatrics.

“I want to give you one last message of peace and harmony,” Dion said.

Emma Oxnevad is a local freelance writer.

SET LIST

“It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” (Pandora’s Box cover)

“That’s The Way It Is”

“I’m Alive”

“If You Asked Me To” (Patti LaBelle Cover)

“The Power of Love” (Jennifer Rush cover)

“Love Can Move Mountains”

“Beauty and the Beast” (from “Beauty and the Beast”)

“ You’re the Voice“ (John Farnham cover)

“Tous les blues sont écrits pour toi”

“To Love You More”

“Courage”

“All By Myself” (Eric Carmen cover)

“Imperfections”

“The Prayer”

“Because You Loved Me”

MEDLEY: “Let’s Dance”/”Another One Bites the Dust”/”Kiss”/”River Deep, Mountain High”/”Lady Marmalade” (David Bowie/ Queen/Prince/Ike & Tina Turner/ Patti LaBelle cover)

ENCORE

“My Heart Will Go On”

“Imagine” (John Lennon cover)

Journalists Ronan Farrow and Rich McHugh told a Chicago audience Thursday about how their former bosses at NBC were resistant to air their investigative piece on sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, and how TV executives promised the Hollywood producer they’d kill the explosive story.

“There were several meetings that had occurred where Ronan kind of revealed all that we had amassed in those months, and the tone changed,” McHugh, an award-winning producer, said at a Chicago Ideas Week discussion.

“It was all of a sudden, ‘Hold on, pause, you know, stop for a while.’”

It was later discovered that Weinstein had attempted to keep the story from running, Farrow and McHugh said.

“Behind the scenes, unbeknownst to us, Harvey Weinstein was laying siege to NBC,” Farrow told Gretchen Carlson, a former Fox News host who filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the former network’s chairman Roger Ailes in 2016.

“There were at least 15 secret calls between NBC executives and Harvey Weinstein, in which promises were made to kill this story before any journalistic judgment had been made. NBC has now conceded that these calls happened.”

Farrow, who has been promoting his new book, “Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators,” also said Weinstein hired private investigators from Black Cube — a private Israeli firm — to follow him.

“I don’t make light of the fact that it was frightening to be in the crosshairs of that,” said Farrow, the son of actress Mia Farrow and director Woody Allen.

“I mean, there were times when I feared for my safety and, you know, my sources were telling me to get a gun, and I moved out of my apartment.”

Discussing his role in the #MeToo movement, Farrow said he and McHugh originally planned to do a series of investigative articles on issues affecting Hollywood, including the long-running problematic phenomenon of the “casting couch.”

Actress Rose McGowan, one of the first women to accuse Weinstein of rape, was a catalyst for the ensuing explosive story, Farrow explained.

“We approached Rose and very rapidly that evolved into not just a broader story but a story where we had multiple named women accusing Harvey Weinstein of rape”, Farrow said. “We had a police tape that I obtained of Harvey Weinstein confessing to a sexual assault and indeed being used to (show) a pattern of sexual assault.”

McHugh added that a turning point in the investigation was hearing audio of Weinstein admitting to assaulting model Ambra Gutierrez.

“I vividly remember when I heard the audiotape for the first time ... his voice was just so incredibly monstrous [and] cunning,” McHugh said. “We saw exactly what all these women were all talking about, and it made perfect sense. But I was also instantly a bit terrified because I knew in my heart that it was the beginning of the end for Harvey Weinstein.”

Farrow — an outspoken critic of Allen, who has also been accused of sexually assaulting his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow — said the campaign against the Weinstein investigation is indicative of the growing disdain for journalists in the United States.

“We do see right now in these underhanded tactics directed at journalists, in the rhetoric directed at journalists, describing them as an enemy of the people,” Farrow said. “The early warning signs of how fragile and precious our profession is. You know, it’s enshrined in the Constitution, and we need to do everything we can to protect journalism in this country.”

Farrow along with New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey won a Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for their reporting on the sexual assault allegations against Weinstein. Kantor and Twohey also wrote a book about their work on the matter, “She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement.”

Before Carlson interviewed Farrow and McHugh Thursday, she told the Chicago Ideas Week audience how she felt isolated when she took on Fox News and Ailes.

“At that time, I felt all alone,” Carlson said. “There was no ‘MeToo’ hashtag explosion at the time. There was no Time’s Up movement. It felt like there was just me taking on one of the most powerful men in the world all by myself.”

Carlson and other female Fox News hosts’ experience with sexism and sexual harassment is the subject of the upcoming film “Bombshell.”

Taylor Swift released her new album “Lover” on Friday, with some big surprises for her fans.

The pop singer, known for her diary-entry lyrical style, applied this concept literally to the project, which includes more than 100 pages of personal journal entries. One of four distinct sets of the writings is included with each of four different deluxe album versions, according to Swift’s website.

Some of the entries date to before Swift’s career took off, with one from 2004 discussing meeting Scott Borchetta for the first time and hoping to be signed to his label, Big Machine.

“I really loved all the stuff he said in the meeting,” the entry partially reads.

One 2009 entry details the aftermath of Kanye West infamously interrupting Swift’s Video Music Awards acceptance speech.

“Let’s just say that if you had told me that Kanye West would have been the number one focus of my week, the media and my part in the VMAs, I would’ve looked at you cross-eyed,” Swift writes.

Another reads: “This summer is the apocalypse.” The entry is dated August 29, 2016, one month after Swift’s feud with West and Kim Kardashian in which the singer was labeled a “snake” on social media.

The journal entries also feature drafts to lyrics to some of Swift’s songs, including “All Too Well” and “Never Grow Up.”

Swift’s fans have taken to Twitter to praise the singer for the entires.

Taylor Swift is planning to re-record her first five albums in order to regain control of her discography.

The “You Need To Calm Down” singer confirmed the news Thursday on “Good Morning America” during an interview with Robin Roberts in which Swift discussed her upcoming album, “Lover,” which is due out Friday.

“One thing about this album that’s really special to me is that it’s the first one that I will own,” Swift said to thunderous applause.

Swift’s announcement comes after a public feud with record executive/manager Scooter Braun, who purchased her former record label Big Machine Label Group earlier this year and gained ownership of all of Swift’s music produced through that label in a deal Swift called the “worst case scenario” in a Tumblr post.

In an interview airing this weekend on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Swift said the deal triggered memories of “the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at [Braun’s] hands for years.”

Swift has accused Braun of bullying her on social media and said the purchase has “stripped [her] of [her] life’s work.”

Swift signed to Big Machine in 2005 before leaving the label in 2018 to sign with Universal Music Group. Big Machine still has the exclusive rights to the master recordings of her work produced in the years Swift was signed there.

“It’s something that I’m very excited about because my contract says starting November 2020 I can record albums one through five all over again,” Swift said in the “GMA” interview. “I think that artists deserve to own their work, I just feel very passionately about that.”

R&B singer Normani released her debut solo single “Motivation” on Friday.

The song was inspired by Normani’s New Orleans roots, but the video is an homage to pop stars of the early 2000s, with a number of intricately choreographed dances that are reminiscent of Beyonce’s early solo work.

Normani rose to prominence in 2012 as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony. Following the band’s indefinite hiatus in 2018, she released a number of collaborations with other artists, including “Love Lies” with Khalid and “Dancing With a Stranger” with Sam Smith.

The singer also recently appeared as an opening act on the North American leg of Ariana Grande’s Sweetener World Tour.

The track and its accompanying music video received rave reviews on Twitter, with many fans praising Normani’s dancing.

“The dancing in this video can’t keep me still! Her moves are outta control!!! Thank you @Normani for the #Motivation on this Friday!” one fan tweeted.

Grande, who co-wrote the song along with Normani, Max Martin, Ilya, and Savan Kotecha, congratulated Normani Friday morning.

And it’s crazy because, I’ll be on Twitter, and [fans] will be like, ‘Sis, where’s the new music? Where’s the new music? I’m like, ‘Guys, it’s coming. I promise it’s coming.’ I shot the video probably a month ago. It’s going to be worth the wait…It’s an upbeat [song]. It’s a feel good record. I think that everybody will really love it. It was the first opportunity that I had to have fun.”
