In a race that ended with familiar leaders from last year, Maryclare Leonard moved even closer to the head of the class.

Marist’s sophomore All-Stater ran to a third-place finish among 137 runners Saturday in the RedHawks’ Class 3A sectional at Midlothian Meadows.

Leonard, who was fifth in the 2013 sectional hosted by Hinsdale Central, covered the Midlothian course in a personal-best this season of 17 minutes, 24.36 seconds.

“I tried to stay calm beforehand. Usually when I get myself nervous, that’s when I don’t do as well,’’ Leonard said. “The Under-Armour helped a lot. I was worried about that at first, I’d be too hot. I’d never worn it.’’

Hinsdale Central’s Alexa Haff, state runner-up last year, won Saturday’s sectional in 17:02.72 to 17:12.06 for Plainfield North’s Rachael Lau.

“In the woods, I was trying to hang with them.’’ Leonard said. “I lost contact a little bit. Then Anne Zaher caught up to me.

“My brother, I kept hearing him say, ‘This is your course, this is your course.’ I just figured I wanted to stay with her. I remember she (Zaher) won the mile at state last year.’’

Zaher, a junior from Hinsdale Central, finished fourth in 17:27.95. The Red Devils won the team title with 50 points ahead of runner-up Lockport (82). Downers North (112), Neuqua Valley (124) and Downers South (158) also advanced to the state meet.

Lockport’s first five were All-Stater Morgan Bollinger (5th, 17:34.80), Emmie Hahn (6th, 17:38.67), Karlee Stortz (19th, 18:14.21), Haley Beaumont (21st, 18:17.56) and Aubrey Friedrich (37th, 18:28.48).

“After the mile, Emmie and I pushed it to get up there with the leaders,’’ Bollinger said. “Once we got up there, we just kept pushing to stay with them.’’

“I think it went really good,’’ Hahn said. “We had a new strategy this meet. The first three of us, after the first mile, we were allowed to break off and get up to the lead pack.’’

Alicia Ary (38th, 18:30.47) and Emily Stoklosa (42nd, 18:33.20) completed the Porters’ lineup.

Sandburg scored 183 and finished seventh, two spots from qualifying for the state meet as a team.

Besides Leonard, Sandburg sophomore Casey Jensen was the only Southland runner to qualify as an individual for the girls state meet. Jensen finished 13th (17:58.97) and earned the fifth of seven individual berths for the state final.

Sandburg junior Grace Foley came within two seconds of returning to the state meet. The final individual spot went to Bolingbrook’s Arianna Amill, who was 16th in 18:01.13 while Foley finished 17th in 18:03.27.

It wasn’t going to matter Saturday that none of the first four runners across the finish line was wearing a Sandburg uniform.

In a race against several of the top teams in Illinois, including defending Class 3A state champion Hinsdale Central, Sandburg maintained a close pack near the front and claimed five of the top 11 spots to run away with the title of the Class 3A Marist Sectional.

“We knew coming in here we really wanted to go win this thing,’’ junior Tom Brennan said.

And win it the Eagles did, scoring an impressive 39 points on the Midlothian Meadows course to win by 55 over the 2013 state champ. Sandburg, Hinsdale Central (94), Neuqua Valley (96), 2013 state runner-up Downers North (111) and Lyons (120) advanced from the 18-team sectional to the state meet.

“Pretty much all year we’ve been waiting to see how we stack up,’’ Brennan said. “So it was nice to get to face them at least once before state.’’

Three juniors—Brennan, Sean Torpy and twin brother, Chris—led the way for Sandburg. Brennan finished fifth (14:51.45), followed closely by Sean Torpy in sixth (14:54.82) and Chris Torpy in seventh (14:55.76).

Senior Greg Burzinski (10th, 14:57.27) and junior Brandon Lukas (11th, 15:00.99) also scored for Sandburg. Martin Skucas (14th, 15:04.31) and Max Lehnhardt (22nd, 15:11.97) reaffirmed the quality of the Eagles’ top seven.

“There was Greg on my shoulder, Sean and Chris on my shoulder,’’ Brennan said. “Martin and Max and Brandon were right there…You don’t really want to let up when you’ve got that many guys around you.’’

“It was definitely the idea of a stepping stone going into the state meet, kind of a dress rehearsal, the top teams in the state here,’’ Sean Torpy said. “We wanted to keep the split down from one to seven as low as possible.’’

Brennan, Burzinski and the Torpys returned from last year’s sectional team that scored 120 and placed fourth.

Sandburg’s 39-point total Saturday was the lowest among the winners of the five Class 3A sectionals. Those kind of numbers don’t surprise the Eagles or Sandburg coach John O’Malley.

“Great teams here, the best in the state,’’ O’Malley said. “We wanted to do what we’ve been doing all year, which is run fearless.’’

“It’s a lot of motivation for us,’’ Chris Torpy said. “We give each other little tips, stay together, and it’s hard for other teams to slip through.’’

Downers North senior Ryan Clevenger was the individual champion in 14:33.94. Clevenger was seventh at the 2013 state final.

Shepard sophomore Caleb Washington was the only Southland runner to qualify as an individual for the state final. Washington finished 23rd (15:12.51) to claim the fifth of seven individual state meet spots.

Oak Lawn (356) placed 12th, Shepard (399) was 13th and Brother Rice finished 15th (423). Oak Lawn senior Luis Garcia (43rd) led the Spartans.

While two sophomores — Maryclare Leonard of Marist and Caleb Washington of Shepard — raced across the Midlothian Meadows course to win individual titles and Sandburg used a combination of youth and experience to claim both team championships at the Eagles’ Class 3A regional.

Sandburg rested its top six finishers from the SouthWest Suburban Blue boys meet victory and still scored 24 points Saturday to win by 54 over Oak Lawn in the nine-team field.

Greg Burzinski (2nd, 15:16.91), Dan Laskero (3rd, 15:35.60), Dylan Jacobs (4th, 15:41.38), David Gleisner (6th, 15:49.36) and Brady Walter (9th, 15:59.98) scored for Sandburg.

“I knew I wanted to run it from the front from the start,’’ said Burzinski, Sandburg’s only regional runner to competed at conference. “It felt really comfortable. I knew I’d have some guys on my back. The last mile fell apart a little bit, but I rallied back.’’

“We had the opportunity with the depth we have to run the second group here,’’ Sandburg coach John O’Malley said. “We knew they’d do well. We could then train the other group.’’

Washington won with a strong kick in the last mile and covered the 2.98-mile course in 15:15.94. He ran 16:04.37 last year on the same course and finished 12th.

“I wanted to stick with the leaders, who were obviously going to be Sandburg,’’ Washington said. “My strategy was to wait until the two mile and then really give it to ‘em, give it all I got all the way to the finish.

“There were a few kinks in that plan. The Sandburg guys weren’t just going to give it to me. I really had to work that last mile.’’

Besides Sandburg, Oak Lawn (78), Shepard (94), Eisenhower (110), Brother Rice (131) and Marist (160) also move on to the RedHawks’ sectional.

The top five individuals who advanced not on qualifying teams were Reavis’ Jonathan Behling (13th) and Tomas Villa (16th), Stagg’s Preston Caydler (14th) and Mount Carmel’s Brendan Jacobs (24th) and Mike Bradley (26th).

In the girls race, All-Stater Leonard (18:00.25) won her second regional title by 48 seconds.

“I got out strong. The girl from McAuley was really pushing me in the beginning, which was good,’’ Leonard said. “I started getting into the pace I wanted to get into.’’

The first five for Sandburg (28) were Casey Jensen (2nd, 18:48.27), Erica Cerva (3rd, 19:01.23), Grace Foley (4th, 19:06.54), Jade Lukas (7th, 19:24.37) and Francesca Strolia (12th, 20:09.70).

“We were back in the forest, communicating really well, making sure to check up on one another, not let one person fall back,’’ Jensen said.

“They all ran a very smart race, which is what we’ve been encouraging them to do,’’ Sandburg coach Jenn Genslinger said. “That 2-3-4 pack was amazing.’’

Runner-up Marist (43), Trinity (88), Mother McAuley (90), Eisenhower (157) and Stagg (165) also qualified for the sectional.

The top five individuals who advanced not from qualifying teams were Shepard’s Kelli Callahan (17th), Oak Lawn’s Tasneem Jaber (19th) and Jessica Sciaky (39th) and Reavis’ Yuliana Olivares (30th) and Christine Trovato (38th).

In the past four seasons, few runners have been in as many cross country meets, and been as durable and diligent, as Elizabeth Venezio.

The Lincoln-Way Central senior added to her impressive list of races Saturday by leading the Knights to their second straight SouthWest Suburban Red meet championship.

“I can’t believe how fast the season went by,’’ Venezio said. “It didn’t hit me until practice on Friday.’’

Venezio and freshman teammate Gretchen Zirgaitis were third and fourth, respectively, at Turtlehead Lake. The entire squad — Madison Smith (fifth), Heidi Killinger (sixth), Dana Boucher (ninth), Emily Furtek (13th) and Amanda Baker (15th)— achieved all-conference status.

“We run the same way, we have the same pace,’’ Venezio said. “It was cool just being able to run with each other.’’

“The best part about our team is how they work together,’’ Central coach Brian VanBeveren said. “They keep each other up throughout the race…The seniors have been great mentors to the young girls.’’

Venezio and Killinger’s experiences have included the past three state meets. Venezio was Central’s top runner at the 2012 state final (18:43).

She was the team’s No. 2 last year (18:54) behind Smith (18:47) when the Knights moved up a spot to 24th place.

Next for Central will be the Minooka Regional on Saturday at Channahon Community Park followed by the Nov. 1 Quincy Sectional.

Central won the Andrew Regional last year and finished third at the Edwardsville Sectional behind Minooka and O’Fallon.

“If we make it to state, it would be awesome if we were top 20, even 21 or 22,’’ Venezio said. “It would be a really good end to the season.’’

Central’s boys team also earned its second straight conference championship Saturday as junior Ian Peterson clocked 15:37 for the individual title.

“I think we can win regional and compete with O’Fallon for sectional,’’ Peterson said. “State, we’ll see what happens. We’re looking for maybe top 12 as a team, top 10.’’

Going far at Thornwood

Thornwood senior Deandra Stokes isn’t the first member of her family to take up running, but she’s the first to go long distances.

“My mom and dad did track, but they were in sprints,’’ Stokes said. “My mom even told me I was crazy for doing distance. She said she could never do it.’’

Stokes made all-conference her only two seasons running cross country. She placed 11th in the 2013 SouthWest Red meet and 12th Saturday at Turtlehead Lake.

Stokes has run track at Thornwood since her sophomore year, but she prefers cross country.

“I like how you can do just one race and die. When you’re done, it’s done,’’ Stokes said.

Thornwood will be in the Andrew Regional, where Stokes hopes to earn a spot to the Quincy Sectional, and hopefully her first state meet berth.

Conference highlights

Sandburg’s Casey Jensen, runner-up to Lockport’s Morgan Bollinger in last year’s SouthWest Blue race, edged All-Stater Bollinger for this year’s title, 18:21.8 to 18:22.5.

Two All-Staters, Marist’s Maryclare Leonard and Fenwick’s Olivia Ryan, were at it again for the East Suburban Catholic title.

Ryan won last year by 15 seconds, but Leonard was a much closer runner-up this time, 17:46.09 to 17:45.56 for Ryan.

In boys races, Sandburg (SouthWest Blue) and Bremen (South Suburban Blue) both repeated as conference champs while Oak Lawn (South Suburban Red) reclaimed the title from Shepard.

In preparation for its regional, state contender Sandburg took seven of the top eight spots in the SouthWest Blue meet, led by individual winner Tom Brennan (15:14.8).

State series

Local Class 3A regionals Saturday will be hosted by Sandburg (Midlothian Meadows), Andrew (Turtlehead Lake) and Lockport (Dellwood Park).

Class 2A regionals include Illiana Christian (North Creek Meadows) and Morris High School, where Lincoln-Way West, Providence, Rich East and Crete-Monee will run.

The top six teams and first five runners not members of qualifying teams in each regional will advance to sectional competition.

Coming to the end of the race, Lincoln-Way North’s Carly Marchal and Lincoln-Way West’s Natalie Krol were running stride for stride.

The two junior standouts had separated themselves from the rest of the field, but not from each other in the SouthWest Suburban Red conference meet Saturday at rainy Turtlehead Lake.

“It was intense, but I knew I could do it,’’ Marchal said. “She (Krol) just wasn’t giving up. I just wanted to stay one step ahead, and at the end I just threw myself over the finish line.’’

Marchal clocked 19 minutes, 7 seconds to edge Krol for the conference title compared to 19:24 last season when Marchal was seventh in the conference race.

“The first mile was fast, but we ran here before and I knew it would be,’’ Marchal said. “The second mile was probably the hardest because you have to mentally keep yourself going fast. If you lose the top group, you’re never going to get back.

“The third mile I was really tired, but I was confident because I knew if I had stayed with them that whole time, I could stay with them the rest of the race. I knew I could kick. I was trying to motivate myself the whole third mile.’’

The next four runners were from Lincoln-Way Central, which repeated as team champion with 27 points to 58 for runner-up North and 61 for Lincoln-Way West.

Central’s top five were Elizabeth Venezio (3rd, 19:17), Gretchen Zirgaitis (4th, 19:17), Madison Smith (5th, 19:19), Heidi Killinger (6th, 19:32) and Dana Boucher (9th, 20:03).

“It really made me reflect back on all four years and think about how blessed I am to be able to run cross country,’’ Venezio said. “The awesome thing about this conference is there’s so many talented runners from all the schools.’’

Also in the top 10 were North’s Abby Casey (7th, 19:46), Andrew’s Sarah Kubas (8th, 19:49) and North’s Karen Perez (10th, 20:06).

In the boys race, junior Ian Peterson won the individual title (15:37) to lead Central to another team championship. North (47) was second and West (65) finished third.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, so it feels pretty cool,’’ Peterson said. “We did really well as a team. We won it last year and the year before that. It’s becoming a tradition.’’

Pre-meet favorite Central placed its first five runners among the top seven. After Peterson, it was Tommy Kolacki (2nd, 15:44), Jackson Waters (3rd, 15:51), Ben Alvarado (5th, 16:03) and Andrew Robbins (7th, 16:20).

“The race is not won on paper. You’ve got to come out here and still have to perform,’’ Central coach John Taylor said. “This weather, we embrace it. It makes us stronger, separates the weak from the strong.’’

Also in the top 10 were North’s John Chomiak (4th, 15:57) and Noah Healy (6th, 16:15), West’s Evan Mitchell (8th, 16:30) and Peter Motto (9th, 16:35) and North’s Dimitri Pancini (10th, 16:36).

In a conference where eight of 10 teams were still in the running for the playoffs, a Week 8 game between two of the top squads figured to go down to the wire.

Instead, Joliet Catholic extended a 13-0 lead with two fourth-quarter touchdowns and the defense did the rest Friday night in the Hilltoppers’ 27-0 East Suburban Catholic win over visiting Benet.

“In our nine-game schedule, this was the best defense we’ll see all year,’’ Benet coach Pat New said.

The offense Joliet Catholic (6-2, 5-1) ran was a surprise to the Redwings. With quarterback Cade Earl out with a knee injury, junior running back Michael Johnson was called on to replace Earl, but from the Wildcat formation.

Johnson responded by rushing for 93 yards on 19 carries ,while Nick Borgra contributed 94 yards on 16 carries.

“Coach (Dan Sharp) told me Sunday, ‘I need you to play quarterback out of the shotgun,’’’ Johnson said. “I looked at him for a second. ‘All right, coach.’ Whole week we’ve been practicing and came out and showed it.’’

Defensively, Joliet held running back Brad Sznajder to 17 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Jack Sznajder was 18-for-34 for 131 yards and three interceptions for Benet (5-3, 3-3).

“We’re still trying to kind of figure it out and improve offensively, just get a little more consistency,’’ New said.

Joliet Catholic overcame six penalties in the first half and led 10-0 at halftime.

Johnson opened the scoring on a 5-yard run with 1:19 left in the first quarter. It ended a 39-yard drive that was set up by the Hilltoppers’ defense.

Benet had recovered a Joliet Catholic fumble on the Redwings’ 16-yard line, but the Hilltoppers didn’t allow a yard on that possession and were rewarded with the short field after the punt.

The Hilltoppers’ defense was led by linemen Ken Aguirre, Jeff Budz, Joe Frescura and Zach Lukasik and linebackers Brad Krisch, Mike Gruben and Peter Riccolo. Gruben, Lukasik and Bill Rotnicki each had an interception.

“This is a big step for our defense,’’ Krisch said. “We’ve worked hard all year and finally got the shutout.’’

JCA kicker Brian Bravo, whose booming opening kickoff hit the Benet crossbar, made two field goals —a 47-yarder in the second quarter and a 42-yarder in the third for a 13-0 lead.

Drew Voss culminated a 59-yard drive with a 5-yard TD run to make it 20-0 with 9:07 left in the game. On Joliet Catholic’s next play from scrimmage, backup quarterback Cameron Behymer connected down the middle with Harold Davis on a 57-yard pass to put the Hilltoppers ahead 27-0.

“What a great team effort, all the way around,’’ Sharp said.

Joliet Catholic ends its regular season with a home game against playoff hopeful Marist, while Benet will host Marian Catholic.

From year to year, Luis Garcia has been a good example of what a high school runner can accomplish in cross country.

Garcia, a senior at Oak Lawn, persevered in the sport after a slow start as a freshman when he ran three miles in 20 minutes.

“I’ve improved so much over the years,’’ he said. “It’s my first year in every invitational being under 16:00. It’s a pretty good feeling. I could hardly break 17:00 last year, freshman year being in the 20:00s.’’

Garcia finished first Saturday at the Jimmy Daniels/Olympian Run at Rich Central, his first individual title (15:45.4).

“I was actually thinking about winning it,’’ Garcia said. “I wasn’t too worried about a time, just get the points for the team.’’

Oak Lawn (71) was a close second to Lincoln-Way West (68) in the 16-team field. The Spartans’ Nick Minnella (fourth) and Diego Arana (seventh) also made the top 10.

Garcia claimed running more miles in the summer and getting older both played a part in his gradual improvement.

“I think it’s a little bit of both, maturity and doing a lot of miles,’’ he said.

Next for Oak Lawn is the South Suburban Red Meet, won by Shepard the past two years after the Spartans were champs in 2011.

“It’s everything for us,’’ Garcia said of Saturday’s race at Conkey Woods. “I couldn’t care less if we come in second in the regional, as long as we win the conference. That’s a huge team goal for this year.’’

Steve Raybould was 20th at Rich Central and has been a solid No. 4 for Oak Lawn. Romello Williams, the Spartans’ fifth runner in Saturday’s meet, Dan Reyes, Eric Sciaky and Enrique Miranda also have contributed.

Lemont youth movement

The addition this season of freshmen Beata Drozda and Celine Ratulowski turned an already strong Lemont girls program into an even tougher team to run against.

With Drozda, sophomore Bridget Kunkel and Ratulowski leading the way, Lemont beat defending champion Marist in the Olympian Run at Rich Central.

While Marist All-Stater Maryclare Leonard breezed to first by 47 seconds (17:54), Lemont placed six individuals among the top nine–Drozda (2nd, 18:41), Kunkel (3rd, 18:43.7), Ratulowski (4th, 18:45.6), Taylor Campos (6th, 18:57.1), Gabby Voltarel (8th, 19:16) and Jorie Dybcio (9th, 19:20.8).

Two weeks ago, Lemont won the small school race at the Tinley Park Invitational with Voltarel leading the pack. Turns out Indians coach Tim Plotke has a clear crystal ball:

“We have a fantastic mix this year of veterans and rookies,’’ Plotke said before the season.

L-Way West builds to top

Lincoln-Way West has raced plenty of state meet level competition this season in big invitationals at Lyons, Peoria Notre Dame and Lockport.

Running against some of the best teams and individuals reaped a reward Saturday for West with a first-place finish in the Olympian Run meet.

The Warriors’ top five runners went 3-5-9-23-28 to edge Oak Lawn, the 2013 winner, by three points.

West was led by Mitch Feehan, who was third (15:54.2) behind Garcia and Rich East’s Diamonte Ugebesia. Also scoring for the Warriors were Evan Mitchell (fifth), Peter Motto (ninth), Jacob Vanderwell (23rd) and Ryan Taylor (28th).

West is expected to be the closest challenger Saturday to defending champ Lincoln-Way Central in the SouthWest Suburban Red Meet at Turtlehead Lake.

Speaking of conference …

Sandburg’s boys team and Lockport’s girls squad will be clearcut favorites Saturday in the SouthWest Suburban Blue races at Channahon Community Park.

Bremen hopes to repeat as South Suburban Blue boys champ while Lemont should retain its girls title at North Creek Meadow in Lansing. Taylor Campos won last year as a sophomore as Lemont took the first six places.

After its last-second loss to Loyola and before a Catholic League Blue showdown against Brother Rice, Providence had a chance to rebound from the defeat and prepare for the game for first place.

The Celtics took advantage of the opportunity.

Providence scored 28 points in the second quarter — three touchdown passes and a 15-yard keeper by quarterback Justin Hunniford — and rolled to a 56-13 crossover victory over visiting Bishop McNamara on Friday night.

Hunniford finished 17-of-26 for 266 yards and five touchdown passes before he yielded to junior Stephen Simowitz late in the third quarter. Hunniford, a 5-10 senior, has 24 TD passes this season.

“I tried to put the game last week in the past as soon as it happened,’’ Hunniford said. “The next day we watched film on it, but after that I just put it in the back of my mind.

“I came out this week with a totally different attitude. I knew I had to be more poised, more calm, stay in the pocket a little longer.’’

Miles Boykin had touchdown catches of 11, 9 and 35 yards, giving the 6-4 senior 16 TDs this season.

The defense for Providence (6-1) was led by the front line of Jake Rost, Luis Vasquez and Tyler Schiemann and linebackers Jimmy Sharkey, Brendan O’Hara, Emmet Trost and Dan Miller.

“It’s good to get back on track after the tough loss,’’ said Sharkey, the team’s leading tackler. “Everybody played pretty well. We’re still making small mistakes. We’ve got to fix those if we want to be a great team.’’

A 34-yard completion from Hunniford to Richie Warfield set up the game’s first TD, Boykin’s 11-yard slant with 7:49 left in the first quarter.

Hunniford’s scoring run on the opening play of the second quarter was followed less than a minute later by the first of Jack Pell’s two interceptions. That set up Boykin’s 9-yard catch in the corner of the end zone, giving the Celtics a 21-0 lead.

The Providence defense held again on the next possession. Boykin broke a tackle on the sideline for a 35-yard TD that put the Celtics ahead 28-0 with 8:23 to go in the first half.

Hunniford connected with Mike Beller from seven yards out to make it 35-7 with 3:36 left before halftime. Erik Carroll’s interception stopped Bishop McNamara’s next possession.

A 19-yard screen to Warfield and Miller’s recovery in the end zone of a bad punt snap put Providence ahead 49-7 in the third quarter.

“All in all, we took care of business,’’ Providence coach Mark Coglianese said. “We know it comes down to next week. It’s a big game for us.’’

Providence is 15-5 all-time against Bishop McNamara (4-3). The teams hadn’t met since 2007, a 40-19 Celtics’ victory.

For many runners, the road to cross country success in high school starts in junior high.

For Shepard sophomore Caleb Washington, the road started last year.

“Last year was my first year running cross country, period,’’ he said.

An exclamation point or two could be in his future.

Washington was 25th out of 553 runners in the Sept. 20th Richard Spring/Peoria Notre Dame Invitational. He ran the Detweiller Park course, site of the state meet, in 15:17.30, best ever there by a Shepard runner.

That came before a second-place finish (15:31) in the big school race at the Sept. 27 Tinley Park Invitational.

“I just tried to hang with them as long as I could and let the best man win,’’ he said of the Tinley Park meet.

Washington dealt with muddy conditions Saturday on the challenging Dellwood Park course in Lockport.
Cross country success for the girls program at Lemont includes a five-year stretch of qualifying for the Class 2A state meet from 2007 through ’11.

What longtime coach Tim Plotke has this year is a team capable of going beyond that record.

“I think this is the best group of girls I’ve ever had, in terms of their commitment, in terms of their wanting to improve,’’ Plotke said. “I was blessed when I started 22 years ago and had a great group of girls.

“These girls are reaping the benefits of all the girls who went before them, but I really believe this group is the best I’ve ever had.’’

Lemont showed some proof of that with a dominating win Saturday in the 15-team small school race at the Tinley Park Invitational.

The order of finish for the Indians was individual champ Gabby Voltarel (18:59), Bridget Kunkel (second), Beata Drozda (third), Celine Ratulowski (sixth), Jorie Dybcio (seventh), Taylor Campos (eighth) and Claire Gagen (20th).

“We’re kind of right where I want us to be. We have a great front six who are pretty close to one another,’’ Plotke said.

Voltarel, a junior, has considerably improved since clocking 22 and 23 minutes as a freshman.

“I started off kind of slow,’’ she said. “The team helps you out a lot. They’re very helpful and caring, really motivational.’’

Before Saturday, the split between the first and sixth individuals for Lemont had been anywhere from 16 to 35 seconds.

“That’s a good split for six runners, which will bode well for us in the coming weeks,’’ Plotke said.

The field Lemont will face Oct. 25 in the Rosary Regional includes three teams from the 2013 state final. Glenbard South is the defending 2A runner-up, Montini was 10th and Rosary 17th.

The first six regional teams will advance to the Wheaton Academy Sectional, where only the top five schools will move on to the state meet.

Mustang makes his mark

A two-time Class 2A state qualifier, Evergreen Park senior Matt Przeslicke wasn’t a runner when he started high school.

“Sophomore year was my first year running cross country,’’ he said. “I started out just under 17:00 that year, ended up getting it down to 16:03 at the state meet. Last year, stayed in the same range. This year I’m for hoping for 15:30 or better.’’

Richards’ Dan Krasich, a senior last season, and Przeslicke were the only two runners from the Southland who qualified as individuals in 2013 for the 2A meet.

Przeslicke ran a personal-best 15:49 to win the small school individual title Saturday at the Tinley Park Invitational.

Przeslicke will have to outrace two strong sophomores — Shepard’s Caleb Washington and Oak Lawn’s Diego Arana — to win at the Oct. 18 South Suburban Red meet.

Stagg reunites ’89 team

To mark the 25-year anniversary of the 1989 Stagg squad that finished second in the 2A state meet, the school will honor those individuals at halftime of Friday night’s homecoming football game.

Team members in ’89 were Jason Rush, Doug Nelson, Joe Simone, Chris Grant, Dave Eaton, Marty Bonick and Chris Vazzana.

The coach was Chris Stec, a 1980 Stagg graduate who has coached the past 24 years at Barrington.

Rush, the girls track coach at Vernon Hills, had the most individual success in cross country. He was fifth in the 1989 state meet in 14:45 and fourth in the 1990 state final in 14:41.

Nelson was sectional cross country champion in 1989 and state runner-up in the 3,200 meters that year.

On the calendar

Two Saturday meets include several top Southland girls teams. Lockport, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Sandburg race at the Wheaton North Flight Invitational while Tinley Park meet winner Marist is at the St. Charles North Invitational.

On the boys schedule, 3A contender Sandburg returns to Detweiller Park for the second time in three weeks for the Peoria Invitational while 2A standout Illiana Christian will race in the Wheaton Academy Invitational.
