O-line coach: Bears in no rush on Kyle Long position

The Bears haven’t made any decisions about moving Kyle Long to tackle, offensive line coach Dave Magazu said Sunday.

The Bears are in no rush to determine Kyle Long’s position, offensive line coach Dave Magazu said Sunday.

“We don’t know who anybody is yet,” he said after the team’s final rookie minicamp practice. “We haven’t put pads on. People sell other people short too quick. This is not a 100-yard dash. Sometimes you have to let things play out.”

The Bears have considered moving Long, a two-time Pro Bowl right guard, to the more hard-to-find tackle spot. They said they will shift most offensive linemen around during practice in the name of versatility, too.

Magazu joked that he liked the cheeky way Long had answered position questions — by saying “Hi, I’m Kyle Long, and I’m the starting right guard for the Bears, and I’m a Sagittarius.”

On Jennings

Tim Jennings “obviously has the speed and explosion” to play both the slot cornerback and outside position, defensive backs coach Ed Donatell said.

“I really like to start with a veteran player — what has he done? And what has he done great?” he said. “I wanna get that back.”

Donatell doesn’t have a prototype for the slot.

This and that

• Asked about the continued absence of tight end Martellus Bennett, who wants either a trade or richer contract, coach John Fox said that he prefers players to be at Halas Hall, “but if they’re not, they’re not.”

• Special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers said his top trait in kick returners is ball security, and that he’ll customize the return plan to whomever wins the job.
