It’s June, and organized team activities have just wrapped up this week at Halas Hall. But veteran members of the Bears’ defense — one with a new scheme — feel confident about the chemistry they’ve started to build this offseason.
“Everything is coming together, for sure,” safety Antrel Rolle said earlier this week during OTAs. “There’s still a lot of work left to be done, which is expected, but things are coming together. The feeling is good and the tempo is great.”
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s thoroughness and patience in his instructions have resonated with his players, even ones familiar with 3-4 defenses.
“You can’t really rush it,” outside linebacker Sam Acho said. “It takes time no matter who you are and what team you’re on. It has to come together in it’s own way, learning defenses and learning players and schemes.
“That’s what OTAs are for. It’s for getting to know each other and getting to know the defense. Right now, we’re learning the defense and how to play off each other.
“We’re just a bunch of guys working hard and trying to get better. Right now, that’s all we are, a bunch of guys going after it. No matter where you were last year, you’re here now, this is your team, and it’s time to get better.”
Again, there are positive vibes.
“We communicate real good,” outside linebacker Pernell McPhee said last week. “It’s going good so far.”
