Bears add vets Daniel Thomas, Sherrod Martin

Safety Sherrod Martin and running back Daniel Thomas, two former second-round picks who spent the Bears’ mandatory minicamp trying out, were signed to one-year deals Thursday afternoon.

To make room, and then some, the Bears waived three players: quarterback Pat Devlin, kicker Jeremiah Detmer and tight end Jacob Maxwell. Devlin’s departure leaves the team with four quarterbacks, while Maxwell was likely rendered expendable upon Martellus Bennett’s return.

The team now has 89 of 90 roster spots filled.

Thomas, drafted No. 62 overall in 2011, had 409 carries for 1,480 yards during his four-year career with the Dolphins, adding 55 catches for 412 yards. He ran 44 times for 168 yards and caught 13 passes for 121 yards in 12 games last season.

Martin has started 38 games over six seasons since being selected No. 59 overall by the Panthers in 2009. He spent last season in Jacksonville, starting twice and appearing in 13 games.
