Two days after rolling his ankle, running back David Montgomery returned to practice on a limited basis Friday. The Bears listed him as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Rams.

“He’s going to end up being a game-time decision for us,” coach Matt Nagy said.

Tight ends Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen were ruled out. Burton has missed practice this week because of a calf injury he suffered against the Lions. Shaheen has a foot problem.

Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan, who suffered a grisly left elbow injury against the Lions, is out and could go on injured reserve Saturday. Backup outside linebacker Isaiah Irving, who has a quad injury, won’t play, either.

If Montgomery can’t play, the Bears might go with a combination of Tarik Cohen, Ryan Nall and Cordarrelle Patterson at running back. Cohen isn’t an every-down back, Nall doesn’t have a single regular-season carry and Patterson is a wide receiver.

Asked how Montgomery was handling the first injury question of his pro career, Nagy described him as quiet and hard to read.

“I know that he wants to be out there as much as he can, and he’s going to try,” Nagy said. “But we just have to see and see where he’s at. But he’s going to do everything he can.”

A groin injury has severely limited Burton’s production and playing time this season. Nagy didn’t dismiss a question about whether the team would consider putting him on injured reserve.

“They’ll be some decisions that we’ve got to collaborate,” he said. “We’ve got to get together and just talk it through and see what’s best for him and what’s best for us and then decide on that.”
