The Bears are still examining the right wrist that defensive lineman Bilal Nichols injured in the second quarter Sunday. But head coach Matt Nagy believes Nichols will avoid injured reserve, he said Monday.

Nichols left Sunday’s game in Denver in the second quarter with what the team at the time called a hand injury. He wore a hard cast in the locker room after the game.

A fifth-round pick last year, Nichols had three sacks as a rookie. Entering this season, the team was excited about him taking another step, inserting him into the starting lineup alongside Akiem Hicks and Eddie Goldman.

“He’s a tough guy, man,” inside linebacker Danny Trevathan said. “I hate that it happened. He’s a tough person. He adds so much fire to this defense.”
