The Bears signed veteran running back Spencer Ware to their practice squad Tuesday, making him an emergency option if they need one against the Jaguars this week or the Packers in the season finale.

Ware, 29, played three games for the Chiefs last season before going on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. He has been out of the NFL since.

His best season was 2016 with the Chiefs, when he ran for 921 yards and three touchdowns and caught 33 passes for 447 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Nagy was the team’s offensive coordinator that season, and they were together two seasons total.

The Bears are unlikely to need Ware with David Montgomery, Cordarrelle Patterson, Artavis Pierce and Ryan Nall on their active roster, but they didn’t have a practice-squad running back after Washington signed Lamar Miller last week.

The Bears held workouts for Ware, Darius Jackson, Wes Hills and Rod Smith last week before deciding to sign Ware.
