Blackhawks rookie defenseman Trevor Van Riemsdyk suffered a left patella fracture after taking a shot to the knee in Sunday’s game against Dallas, the Blackhawks announced Wednesday.

He will have surgery Thursday and is expected to miss three to four months.

Van Riemsdyk, 23, has one assist in 18 games in his first professional season with the Blackhawks. Signed as a free agent on March 24, van Riemsdyk tallied his first professional point with an assist on Nov. 9 against San Jose. The Middletown, N.J., native previously recorded 75 points in three seasons at the University of New Hampshire.
