SUNRISE, Fla. — The Blackhawks announced today they have shut down right wing Andrew Shaw and center Zack Smith for the rest of the season.

Shaw has been in the concussion protocol and was expected to be ruled out. He ended the season with three goals and seven assists.

“He adds an element to our team, both on and off the ice that we wanted to add: a lot of personality in the dressing room, holds guys accountable, pushes them, makes them uncomfortable, drags them into the fight, helps to prepare them to play,” coach Jeremy Colliton said after morning skate. “And on the ice, obviously, he plays all situations. He can get your team going on a Tuesday night in November.

“He can get the group engaged, and obviously we miss that.”

Smith was out with a hand injury, but the Hawks are shelving him because of his back. He will undergo surgery Friday. Smith had four goals and seven assists.
