Illinois employers planning 900 layoffs

Companies in Illinois plan to lay off about 900 workers in the next several months.

Three companies account for two-thirds of the layoffs. Aramark, Kmart and Mount Zion Flat Glass, according to a monthly report from the Illinois Departmet of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Aramark in St. Charles expects to cut 265 workers because of the loss of a contract. Kmart will lay off 180 workers when it closes stores in Forest Park and Peoria. And the sale of Mount Zion Flat Glass, a glass manufacturer near downstate Decatur, is likely to idle 187 employees.

Other employers making cuts include Comcast, Nokia, and Country Store Holdings. The Atwood Hotel reported a temporary layoff of 48 people during a renovation.

The Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers to provide 60 days advance notice of plant closures or mass layoffs. The law applies to businesses with 75 or more full-time employees.
