NEW YORK — NBC said Monday that it is ending its business relationship with mogul and GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump because of comments he made about immigrants during the announcement of his campaign.

NBC said it would no longer air the annual “Miss USA” and “Miss Universe” pageants, which had been a joint venture between the company and Trump. Trump has said he is no longer appearing in the television show “The Apprentice.” NBC said “Celebrity Apprentice” will continue to go on without him.

TRUMP IN CHICAGO Tells City Club he’ll sue Univision, probably NBC

“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” NBC said in the statement.

Trump told reporters in Chicago after his appearance at the City Club that he’s not apologizing for claiming some Mexican immigrants bring drugs and crime to the country. He says if his “strong stance” on immigration fuels NBC’s decision, he’s fine with it. He says he’ll “probably” sue.

Last week, Univision said that it was canceling its coverage of the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. Trump had portrayed some immigrants from Mexico as bringing drugs and crime to the country in his presidential kickoff speech.

A petition asking NBC to fire Trumphas collected more than 200,000 signatures.

Posted on the Change.org website, the petition calls out NBC of choosing business over “ethics, principles and values” in the wake of Trump’srecent statements when declaring his candidacy for president. Among his remarks, the GOP hopeful portrayed immigrants from Mexico as “bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists, and some, I assume, are good people.”

Last week, Univision, the nation’s largest Spanish-language network, said it wouldn’t air the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which are co-owned byTrump, and will cut all future business ties with him.

“A large part of your audience is Hispanic and we watch NBC, NBC News and Telemundo,” said the man who posted the petition, Guillermo Castaneda, Jr., in addressing NBC. “How about looking out for us?”
