The company resulting from the merger of Walgreen Co. and Alliance Boots will remain headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, the Chicago Tribune is reporting.

Walgreen completed its purchase of European beauty retailer Alliance Boots on Dec. 31.

Walgreens had previously flirted with the idea of relocating its headquarters to Switzerland to save up to $4 billion in taxes. The discussion of relocating the 114-year-old company sparked a public outcry, led by Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin.

The Tribune reports:

Being a United States-based retail operation based in Deerfield, it made sense to have all the offices in one place, said Michael Polzin, Walgreens’ vice president of corporate communications. It will allow us to be more efficient with our office space and communication within our divisions.

Earlier this month, Walgreen Co. announced it would close about 200 stores nationwide as part of a $1 billion cost-reduction plan ahead of the merger.
