The Chicago Teachers Union said Monday that its president, Karen Lewis, was hospitalized after experiencing “discomfort” Sunday evening.
CTU spokeswoman Stephanie Gadlin issued a statement denying rumors that Lewis, a possible mayoral contender, had suffered a stroke.
“We respect Karen’s privacy just as we value her leadership,” Gadlin wrote in a statement. “I’m sure she’ll determine whether or not another public statement is warranted.”
“Karen is a freedom fighter, a nationally recognized education advocate and the people’s champ. She’ll be back on her feet in no time. She is resting well and in good spirits — and still thinking of creative ways to secure the future and city our students and their families deserve.”

Gadlin would not provide further details. Lewis did not return messages left on her cellphone. Neither did Emma Tai, a spokeswoman for Lewis’ mayoral exploratory committee.
Lewis, who had weight-loss surgery in March after suffering a fall, has not yet declared entry into February’s mayoral race.
In an emailed statement, Kelley Quinn, Rahm Emanuel’s director of communications, wrote: “The Mayor wishes Karen well, and that she makes a full and speedy recovery.”
Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd) has announced he’s running. He released a statement Monday wishing Lewis “a speedy recovery.”
“Karen is a valuable voice in the debate about our city’s future and we look forward to hearing from her soon,” campaign spokesman Michael Kolenc wrote.
