A 14-year-old boy was shot Thursday afternoon in south suburban Matteson.
An officer on patrol about 1:30 p.m. near Lincoln Highway and Cicero Avenue heard about five gunshots in the area, according to a statement from Matteson police.
He drove to Rose Plaza in the 4700 block of Lincoln Highway and spotted two people running northbound, police said. It was then reported that a gunshot victim was in the front parking lot of the plaza.
The boy was sitting in a vehicle with four other occupants, traveling westbound on Lincoln Highway when another vehicle, containing only one person, began following, police said. The victims’ vehicle pulled into the plaza, the other vehicle pulled alongside, and the occupant opened fire.
The boy was shot in the lower back, through the vehicle and back seat, police said. He was the only person injured and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He is expected to survive.
The officer was able to apprehend one of the people he spotted running away, but it was determined the person was a witness running from the shooting, police said. Officers searched the area, but did not find anyone else.
