A man was killed and another wounded in a shooting outside a party late Saturday in East Chicago, Indiana.
About 11:30 p.m., 20-year-old Kentrail Nelson Jr. was dancing with a woman at the party in the 5000 block of Melville Avenue when another man pushed him and became “verbally hostile,” according to a statement from East Chicago police.
Nelson and an 18-year-old Gary man decided to leave the party when the man who pushed him walked up with a handgun along with three other armed men and asked where they were from before opening fire, police said.
Nelson was shot multiple times and taken to Saint Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where he died shortly after midnight, authorities said. He lived in the 1400 block of Regent Lane in south suburban Ford Heights, according to the Lake County coroner’s office.
The 18-year-old was shot in the upper arm and leg, police said. He was taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake in Gary.
The shooter is described as a 6-foot-3 black man with a slender build and dreadlocks.
East Chicago police are asking anyone who has information or photographs from the party to contact detectives at firstname.lastname@example.org or jorange.com. Anonymous tips can be left at (219) 391-8500.
