A man was charged with gun and drug possession after a traffic stop this week in Rogers Park on the North Side.

Andre Johnson, 25, is facing a felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a firearm, according to a statement from Evanston police.

Officers saw Johnson driving a blue Hyundai when he failed to signal while making a left turn about 1:30 a.m. Monday at Howard Street and Asbury Avenue in Evanston, police said. They pulled the Hyundai over in the 7500 block of North Western Avenue in Chicago.

While officers were talking to Johnson, they smelled marijuana, police said. When they asked him about the smell, he handed over a bag containing about 9.5 grams of pot.

He also told the officers he had a loaded gun in the vehicle, and that he had a valid FOID card but no concealed-carry permit, police said. Police found a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun in the Hyundai. Johnson was arrested and the car was impounded.

Johnson was also charged with a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license and issued citations for possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana, driving without insurance and failing to signal 100 feet before a turn, police said.

He has since been released on electronic monitoring and is due back in court Dec. 17 at the Skokie Courthouse, according to police.
