A man was killed by what may have been a stray bullet Sunday in East Chicago, Indiana.

Officers responding to reports of gunfire at 2:02 a.m. found 22-year-old Alan L. Ross dead with apparent gunshot wounds to his face near 140th and Pulaski streets, according to a statement from East Chicago Police Lt. Marguerite Wilder.

A witness told investigators someone started shooting during a fight, Wilder said. People ran away when shots rang out before noticing that Ross had been hit.

“Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that the victim was an involved party in the fight or the intended target of the shots fired,” Wilder said. East Chicago police have not had any prior contact with Ross, who lived in Hammond, Indiana.
