A 17-year-old boy was killed Thursday while standing outside with his 15-year-old friend in the Chicago Lawn area on the Southwest Side.

Deante Thompson was outside with his friend about 12:25 a.m. in the 6900 block of South Maplewood Avenue when an unknown person approached them on foot, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. They tried to run to a nearby apartment, but the person fired shots and hit the Thompson in the chest.

Thompson was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and pronounced dead, authorities said. His friend was unable to provide police with a description of the shooter.

An autopsy found that Thompson died of a gunshot wound to the torso, the medical examiner’s office said.
