Man killed, 2 wounded in Near West Side shooting

A man was killed and a woman was wounded in a shooting Sunday on the Near West Side.

Officers responded to a large group disturbance about 1:33 a.m. in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street, Chicago police said.

They received reports of gunshots and found 27-year-old John Benford hit in the chest and unresponsive, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 25-year-old woman was hit in the forearm and took herself to the same hospital, police said. Her condition was stabilized.

A 19-year-old man who later showed up at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to his right arm and left leg, police said.

No one is in custody as Area Central detectives investigate.
