A father from South Holland was fatally shot Wednesday on the streets of south suburban Calumet City.

Police were called to gunfire about 9:55 p.m. in the 300 block of Oglesby Avenue and found 32-year-old Desmond Stewart lying unresponsive on the ground, Calumet City police said.

Stewart had been shot multiple times, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Paramedics took him to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy released Thursday ruled his death a homicide.

A friend of Stewart, Danae Russel, offered prayers for his family.

“There’s no reason why this had to happen,” Russell wrote on Facebook. “I don’t know anybody that ever had anything negative to say about Desmond. I’ve known him since McKinley days and it’s always been nothing but love whenever I saw him.”

Sharonda Baker said Stewart was smart, kind, generous and a great father.

“I pray for justice, comfort and understanding for your daughter, family and friends,” she wrote on Facebook.

Calumet City police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are conducting a homicide investigation.
