A teenager was fatally shot and another wounded Sunday while driving to work in southwest suburban Joliet.

The boy and girl, both 17, were driving with two other people about 3:05 a.m. when a dark-colored SUV began following them, Joliet police said.

The SUV pulled up to them in the 700 block of Palladium Drive East and at least one person inside fired shots, striking the two teenagers, police said.

Authorities arrived and found the boy dead of his injuries, police said.

An autopsy found that the boy, identified as Tyrone Portis, died from multiple gunshot wounds, the Will County coroner’s office said. He lived in Joliet.

Portis and his nephew had been driving from a cousin’s birthday party in Shorewood to work at Walmart on Route 59, Portis’ mother told the Herald-News.

The 17-year-old girl was taken in serious condition to St. Joseph Medical Center, police said. Her condition was stabilized.

Joliet police are investigating the homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 815-724-3020.
