Ohio man charged with attempted murder in suburban truck stop shooting

An Ohio man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, among several other felonies, for his role in a truck stop shooting June 8 in the far northwest suburb of Hampshire.

About 4:45 p.m., Lutz, 57, was at a truck stop off U.S. Route 20 in Hampshire when he began arguing with a male who he believed was blocking the road, the Kane County state’s attorney’s office said.

Lutz then went to his semi-truck and pulled out a handgun, the state’s attorney’s office said. The male got back into the cab of his own truck, at which point Lutz allegedly fired two shots through the door, grazing the male.

After the shooting, Lutz drove a short distance away and parked near the intersection of Illinois Route 47 and Interstate 90, where he consumed 30 pills in an apparent suicide attempt, the state’s attorney’s office said. Police found Lutz shortly after and arrested him.

In addition to the attempted first-degree murder charge, Lutz was charged with a litany of gun offenses and one count of criminal damage to property, the state’s attorney’s office said.

A Kane County Associate Judge set his bail at $750,000, the state’s attorney’s office said. Lutz is due in court June 20.
