A man was fatally shot and another wounded Thursday in Austin on the West Side, according to police.

They were walking in the 5400 block of West Monroe Street about 2:45 p.m. when a gunman approached them and fired shots, Chicago police said.

Sharnearl Mason, 30, was struck in the head, neck and leg, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy found Mason, who lived in the same neighborhood, died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

A man, 19, was grazed on the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. His condition was stabilized.

Area North detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
