A 37-year-old man is in critical condition after an attempted robbery Monday in Edgewater on the North Side.

About 11:10 p.m., the man was standing outside waiting for a friend in the 1000 block of West Bryn Mawr Avenue when two men approached him and punched him repeatedly in the face, Chicago police said. He fell to the ground and hit his head on the concrete, at which point the two men began to go through his pockets.

The pair fled the scene when the man’s friend came to his aid, police said. They were last seen running east on Bryn Mawr Avenue.

The man was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition but he is expected to live, police said. It does not appear that anything was taken from him.

No one is in custody as Area North detectives investigate.
