Man killed, another wounded in Fernwood shooting: police

A man was killed and another wounded in a shooting Saturday outside the Imperial Motel in Fernwood on the South Side. 

A 36-year-old man was walking about midnight in the first block of West 103rd Street and saw a large group of people gathered outside when he heard gunfire and felt pain, Chicago police said.

He was hit in the leg and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where his condition was stabilized, police said. 

Joshua Smith, 19, was found with a gunshot wound to the back in a nearby alley, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was taken to the same hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy conducted Saturday said Smith died of a gunshot wound to the back. The medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide.

No arrests have been reported. Area South detectives are investigating.
