A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot by someone he possibly knew early Tuesday in northwest Indiana.

Officers responded about 12:30 a.m. to a shooting at a home in the 7000 block of Lindberg Avenue in Hammond, according to Hammond police Lt. Steve Kellogg.

Inside the home, officers found 17-year-old Dante J. Figueroa inside one of the bedrooms with a gunshot wound to his head, Kellogg said. Several people were still inside the home.

Figueroa, of Hammond, was taken to Methodist Northlake Hospital, where he was pronounce dead at 1:32 a.m., Lake County Coroner’s Merrille Frey said. An autopsy ruled his death a homicide.

Kellogg said police believe the suspect and victim knew each other, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. John Suarez at 219-852-2981, Kellogg said.
