Police: Cryptic threat found written on wall in home of suspected cigar lounge shooter

Days after a woman shot three Illinois State Troopers in a west suburban cigar lounge, police say a cryptic, threatening message was found written on the wall of her Hyde Park condo.

The phrase “I hate you … hope you two die!” along with the names of two men was found written on a wall in the home of Lisa McMullan, Lisle police announced Monday.

One of the men named was Gregory Rieves, who was killed. The other man named was not at the cigar lounge the night of the shooting.

McMullan, police say, went to the Humidor cigar lounge shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday and opened fire, striking three state troopers, killing one of them. The deceased officer was later identified as recently retired Rieves, 51.

After shooting the three men, McMullan then shot and killed herself.

McMullan, 51, fired a total of seven shots, including the one she used to take her own life, police said.

Police said McMullan and the three troopers knew each other and that Rieves and McMullan were known to frequent the Humidor at the same time. The extent of their relationship is still under investigation.

Police initially said that Rieves and McMullan both attended Proviso East High School in Maywood during the 1980s. But after investigators spoke to McMullan’s mother, police announced Sunday the alleged shooter actually went to the now-shuttered Cathedral High School on the Near North Side.

McMullan possessed a valid Firearm Owner Identification card and a concealed-carry license issued by state police and had no known criminal history, police said.

Surveillance video of the incident will not be released, Lisle police said Monday, citing the section of the Freedom of Information Act that allows withholding personal information if the release would constitute “a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.”

The department also is not releasing police reports at this time “to preserve the integrity of the investigation.”
