A 67-year-old woman shot and killed a man allegedly stealing items from her garage Sunday morning in Marquette Park on the Southwest Side.

The homeowner got a call from her neighbor, alerting her that someone was breaking into her garage in the 7100 block of South Mozart Street, according to Chicago police spokeswoman Sally Bown.

The woman told investigators she went outside with a gun and found the man exiting a side door of the garage, holding some of her belongings, Bown said. She shot him in the chest.

Authorities responded to her home at 11:15 a.m. and found the man lying unresponsive on the ground, Bown said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was identified as Lamont Fleming, 58, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy ruled his death a homicide.

The homeowner complained of trouble breathing and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, Bown said. A police report did not mention if she is a licensed gun owner.
