Man killed in Humboldt Park shooting

A man was shot to death Thursday while driving in Humboldt Park on the West Side.

The man, 39, was driving about 7 p.m. when someone fired shots at him in the 3600 block of West Grand Avenue, Chicago police said. He was struck in the head and neck, and crashed into three parked vehicles while trying to drive away.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Anthony Sipp of Lawndale on the West Side.

Police sources said Sipp was a “well known and influential” member of a Four Corner Hustlers faction based near Division and Monticello, not far from where he was killed.

Inside the car Sipp was driving, police found more than a dozen 9 mm bullet casings and three more .45 caliber casings, suggesting more than one shooter was involved, according to a police source.

Nicknamed “Big Ant,” Sipp stood 6-foot-2 and weighed nearly 350 pounds, according to Illinois prison records.

In 2011, Sipp was one of six men charged with taking part in a criminal drug conspiracy on the West Side. He pleaded guilty in 2016 and was sentenced to six years in prison, records show. He was released on parole two years later.

The area where Sipp was killed has long been a hotbed for drug activity. Earlier this year, federal authorities charged 18 men who allegedly operated an open-air drug market about two blocks south from where Sipp was shot.

Area Four detectives are investigating.
