Woman, 21, shot dead in South Shore

A 21-year-old woman was fatally shot Thursday during an argument in the South Shore neighborhood.

About 2:40 a.m., officers responding to the sound of gunshots found the woman lying on the sidewalk in the 7000 block of South Clyde Avenue, Chicago police said. She had multiple gunshot wounds to her chest.

She was rushed to University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead, police said.

An investigation found she was arguing with someone in a black vehicle who shot her before fleeing, police said.

She was identified as Mariah Edwards by the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy confirmed she died of multiple gunshot wounds and ruled her death a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

Area Central detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
