A man who was shot by a masked man at a gas station in southwest suburban New Lenox has died from his injuries.

Charles Baird, 19, died about 11 p.m. Monday at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

About midnight Monday, Baird was walking to his vehicle in the Circle K gas station, 471 Nelson Rd., when he was confronted by a male wearing a surgical mask and carrying a semi-automatic gun, authorities said.

Baird tried to run but was shot in the back, authorities said. The suspect got into a vehicle parked at a gas pump and drove off.

Autopsy results released Friday confirmed Baird died of his injuries and ruled his death a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said. He lived in New Lenox.

New Lenox police said the shooting may have stemmed from an attempted carjacking.
