Police are warning businesses about a series of armed robberies this month in the Chatham and Gresham neighborhoods on the South Side.
Five businesses have been robbed at gunpoint since Jan. 17, according to a community alert from Chicago Police.
In two of the robberies, the suspect entered the business and allowed customers to go ahead of him in line so he would be the last person left inside, police said. He then made a purchase before pulling a handgun, pointing it at the clerk and announcing a robbery.
The robberies occurred in:
- the 0-100 block of West 79th at 6:03 p.m. Jan. 17;
- the 8500 block of South Cottage Grove at 7:21 p.m. Jan. 17;
- the 300 block of East 87th at 8:13 p.m. Jan. 19;
- the 1900 block of West 79th at 7:35 p.m. Jan. 22; and
- the 400 block of East 87th at 6:50 p.m. Jan. 23.
Descriptions of the suspects in each robbery have varied widely, and some of the robberies involved two suspects, police said. Surveillance images of the suspect from the Jan. 19 robbery in the 300 block of East 87th Street show a black man in a dark-colored jacket and black hat.
