A 56-year-old man was found dead Monday afternoon at his home in northwest Indiana, and his death has been ruled a homicide.

Officers were called at 1:50 p.m. about a suspicious vehicle in the 4200 block of Monroe Street in Gary, Indiana, according to a statement from Gary police. When the officers arrived they “observed a substance believed to be blood in the vehicle.”

Investigators identified the vehicle’s owner and went to a home in the 3600 block of Johnson Street to conduct a welfare check, police said. The door was ajar when they arrived, so they entered the home to investigate.

Officers found Edward Norwood, who lived in the home, dead in a bedroom, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:28 p.m.

The coroner’s office found that Norwood died from trauma and ruled his death a homicide. Authorities did not release further details about the nature of his injuries.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Det. Corporal James Bond with the Lake County/Gary Metro Homicide Unit at (219) 755-3855 or the crime tip line at (866) CRIME-GP.
