Police in northwest suburban Crystal Lake are investigating a possible threat posted on Facebook by a clown-themed account, the latest in a wave of clown threats and sightings across the Chicago area.
The “implied threat” to Prairie Ridge High School was posted Tuesday by an anonymous account with “clowns” in its name, according to a statement from Crystal Lake police.
“While there is no evidence that suggests the implied threat is credible, Crystal Lake Police take all reported crimes seriously,” the statement said. Police and school officials have notified the FBI as they try to track down anyone behind the account.
The clown phenomenon spreading across the nation has included sightings throughout the city and suburbs, including a 16-year-old Hammond, Indiana student arrested for making clown threats online to several schools.
