State child-welfare authorities are investigating the Friday night death of a 1-year-old girl in southwest suburban Joliet .
Melanie Massey, of the 500 block of Bellarmine Drive in Joliet, was pronounced dead just after 9 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of abuse and neglect against the girl’s parents, DCFS spokeswoman Veronica Resa said Saturday.
An autopsy was inconclusive pending further studies, and police are waiting for more medical reports before releasing additional details, authorities said.
“Detectives have interviewed several people and the investigation is ongoing,” Joliet police Chief Brian Benton said Sunday.
It wasn’t immediately clear if DCFS has had prior contact with Melanie’s family, or if there are other children in the household.
