State child welfare officials are investigating an allegation of neglect against the caretaker of a 2-year-old South Side girl who died Friday night.
Crews responded to a call of a child not breathing about 11 a.m. Thursday at a home in the 4700 block of South Damen, police News Affairs Officer Stacey Cooper said.
Valentina Damas was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where the toddler died at 9:44 p.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy was inconclusive, with results pending further studies.
The girl’s caretaker — not a parent — is being investigated for neglect in Valentina’s death, DCFS spokeswoman Veronica Resa said.
The agency has not had prior contact with the caretaker, and Valentina’s siblings were not removed from the home, Resa said.
