Former doctor gets 8 years for child pornography possession

A former doctor from west suburban Downers Grove who pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography was sentenced to eight years in prison Friday.

Judge Liam Brennan sentenced 68-year-old Edward J. McMenamin to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections Friday, according to a statement from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office. McMenamin had entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of child pornography on March 10.

Downers Grove police started investigating the doctor in late 2013, after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children through the Illinois attorney general’s office, prosecutors said.

Authorities later found that McMenamin had “numerous” images and videos depicting child pornography, prosecutors said.

He was arrested May 29, 2014, at his home in the 4200 block of Saratoga in Downers Grove. He was employed as a family practice physician, the statement said.

“Child pornographers such as Edward McMenamin believe their sickening needs trump the law,” state’s attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “Today, Mr. McMenamin learned that his lust for child pornography, which claims hundreds of thousands of victims every year, will cost him his freedom for the next eight years.”

McMenamin will be required to serve half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole, prosecutors said. He must also register a sex offender for life.
