Man charged with shooting, robbing man in Irving Park

A man has been charged with shooting another man during a robbery last week at a car wash in the Irving Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Roberto Vargas, 19, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery with the discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm, all felonies, according to court records.

On Friday, Cook County Judge Laura Marie Sullivan ordered him held on a $1 million bond, court records show.

Vargas, of the 1500 block of North Kostner, was identified as one of two suspects who participated in the robbery and shooting of a 44-year-old man on Jan. 26, according to an arrest report.

About 7 a.m., the victim was inside his car wash in the 3600 block of North Kedzie, when a male walked in and asked if he was hiring, saying his friend outside was looking for a job, a police report said.

The man said he wasn’t hiring and the male outside then walked into the business, pulled out a handgun and demanded money, the police report said. The armed robber then shot the man in the chest and leg and the pair stole money before running away.

The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, police said at the time.

Vargas is next scheduled to appear in court Thursday, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.
