Injuries keep piling up at the worst possible time for the Cubs.

On Sunday, Anthony Rizzo needed to be helped off the field after spraining his right ankle. He was trying to field a bunt when he lost his footing in the infield grass.

Initial X-rays that were taken at the ballpark did not reveal a fracture, the Cubs announced. Rizzo is scheduled to have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the ankle sprain.

Rizzo writhed in pain as trainers attended to his injured ankle in the top of the third inning. He barely put any weight on the leg as he hobbled toward the dugout with the help of the team’s medical staff and teammate Jason Heyward.

The Cubs already are without star shortstop Javier Baez for the rest of the regular season. The team also placed shortstop Addison Russell on the seven-day concussion list before Sunday’s game and has been without key contributors such as Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras for various parts of the season.

Rizzo entered the day hitting .289 with 26 homers and 93 RBIs. He drew walks in each of his first two plate appearances Sunday before his injury.

The Cubs trailed the Cardinals by three games for first place in the National League Central entering Sunday.
