The injuries continue to pile up for the Cubs and star third baseman Kris Bryant is among the team’s walking wounded as he battles a variety of injuries.

Bryant’s most recent ailment, in his left wrist, has bothered him since he jammed it while attempting to make a diving catch while playing left field against Cleveland on Aug. 12.

While Bryant has stayed in the lineup amid the wrist injury, he was not in the lineup against the Cardinals on Tuesday. The Cubs’ third baseman received an injection in the left wrist. Manager David Ross said before Tuesday’s game against St. Louis that Bryant will be out the next two days as they wait and see how the wrist responds to treatment.

“I listen to the players and the doctors and the experts,” Ross said. “If we thought it was best for us to put Kris on the IL, we would put it there. But I think the best thing for Kris and the Cubs right now, is kind of wait and see. … We’ll wait until after the off-day and see where he’s at.”

The litany of injuries has limited Bryant as the former National League MVP hasn’t looked like himself at the plate. The Cubs’ third baseman is slashing .177/.271/.323 this season with two home runs and four RBIs.

“He’s battling a lot of things right now,” Ross said on Monday. “It’s hard to talk about the swing and you know, you want to have results. He definitely wants to have results and he expects to be great. He’s been a great player in his career. I think he’s got some bumps and bruises and just trying to grind it out for the guys. I give a lot of credit to that, to be honest with you. It’d be easy for him to sit out till he felt 100 percent. He’s not, he’s out there grinding, playing good defense. Attitude has been good. We’re all going to struggle and it’s just right now it’s what he’s going through.”

Souza Jr. to the injured list, Pérez selected from South Bend

The Cubs placed outfielder Steven Souza Jr. on the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday’s game against the Cardinals with a right hamstring strain, retroactive to Aug. 17. Souza was scratched before Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader after feeling tightness in the hamstring.

Souza Jr. was batting .190 with two doubles, one homer and five RBI in nine games this season. In a corresponding move, the Cubs purchased the contract of utility man Hernán Pérez from alternate site South Bend.

To make room for Pérez on the 40-man roster, left-hander Brad Wieck was placed on the 45-day IL with a left knee/meniscus injury. Wieck originally went on the injured list on July 26 after suffering a right hamstring strain.
