The Cubs continued to make moves ahead of Friday’s trade deadline, sending right-hander Ryan Tepera to the White Sox for minor-league pitcher Bailey Horn.

Tepera, 33, was one of the pillars of the Cubs’ bullpen along with recently traded left-hander Andrew Chafin and closer Craig Kimbrel. He is having a career season with a 2.91 ERA in 43 games.

“Tepera, Chafin, Kimbrel were the guys that we went to to win baseball games,” manager David Ross said. “When you lose two of those three guys, it makes it difficult. Those guys pitch really big innings.

‘‘Tepera is someone who came in here last year in my first season and really made an impact. That’s why you get traded; it’s because you’re doing a really good job. We brought him back here because he did a nice job for us and even built on that.”

Horn, a left-hander, was 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA in 10 starts at High-A Winston Salem.

“It’s sad to see [Tepera] go,” Ross said. “But I’m happy he’s going to get a chance to pitch in the playoffs.”

Hoerner (oblique) lands on injured list

The Cubs put Nico Hoerner on the 10-day injured list before the series finale Thursday against the Reds with a strained right oblique. Hoerner injured the oblique in the seventh inning Wednesday on a check swing. He grimaced in pain as he walked back to the dugout and headed directly to the clubhouse.

It has been a tough season for Hoerner on the injury front. He missed time in May after his collision with outfielder Ian Happ and also suffered a strained left hamstring. This is his third stint on the injured list.

Hoerner is slashing .313/.388/.388 with 10 doubles and has been one of the National League’s elite defensive second basemen. The Cubs recalled infielder Sergio Alcantara to take his place on the roster.

The Cubs also put right-hander Dillon Maples on the 10-day injured list with a blister on his right middle finger.

Maples, 29, has a 2.28 ERA in 24 games. Right-hander Trevor Megill was recalled to take his spot on the roster. Megill has an 11.57 ERA in seven appearances this season.

In yet another move, the Cubs optioned right-hander Cory Abbott to Triple-A Iowa and selected the contract of righty Jake Jewell.

Jewell, 28, has big-league experience, most recently with the Angels in 2019. He has had a strong year in Iowa with a 2-1 record and 2.78 ERA in 23 games.

To make room for Jewell on the 40-man roster, right-hander Kohl Stewart was put on the 60-day injured list.
