Man shot to death in Avondale alley: police

Abel Lopez was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

A man was found fatally shot Aug. 16, 2020, in the 3600 block of West Belmont Avenue.

A 26-year-old Jefferson Park man was found shot to death Sunday morning in Avondale on the Northwest Side.

Officers found him unresponsive in the driver’s seat at 5:05 a.m. in an alley in the 3600 block of West Belmont Avenue, Chicago police said.

Abel Lopez died at the scene from a gunshot to his head, officials said.

An autopsy released Monday ruled his death a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation by Area Five detectives.

Known as a left ventricular assist device, the HeartMate 3 helps the main pumping chamber of the heart pump blood to the rest of the body. The device can be used by patients awaiting a heart transplant or for long-term therapy. The device is powered by a cable that is attached to the pump and exits the body through a surgical opening and connects to a controller and batteries or other power source, according to the manufacturer’s instruction manual.
