Selena Gomez may be the third most followed person on Instagram, but that didn’t stop her from sharing her concerns about the “terrible” effects of the social media platform.
While promoting her upcoming film “The Dead Don’t Die,” a comedy about zombies taking over a small town, the cast was asked, “What do you think is the most pressing issue … when it comes to our planet?”
Gomez, 26, admitted that the amount of social media young people have been exposed to “scares” her.
”I think our world is going through a lot, obviously. But for my generation, specifically, social media has been terrible,” she said during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival Wednesday. “They aren’t really aware of the news or anything going on.”
Gomez continued: “It’s just – I don’t want to say selfish because that feels rude – but it’s dangerous, for sure. I don’t think people are getting the right information sometimes.”
When asked how to make Instagram a safe space, Gomez said it’s “pretty impossible.”
The actress, who has over 150 million followers on Instagram, only trailing soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (166 million) and pop singer Ariana Grande (155 million), said she’s “very grateful for the platform” but advises it be used in moderation.
”It can be great in moments, but I would just be careful and allow yourself some time limits,” Gomez said, adding that she’s very “intentional” with all of her posts.
The “Taki Taki” singer has voiced her worries on social media overexposure before.
During Coach’s first-ever episode of their “Dream It Real” podcast last month, Gomez said too much screen time on Instagram made her “kind of depressed looking at these people who look beautiful and amazing, and it would just get me down a lot, so I just think taking breaks is really important.”
Gomez took a three-month hiatus from social media in late September, announcing on Instagram that she planned to “live my life present to the moment I have been given.”
Gomez stars in Jim Jarmusch’s film “The Dead Don’t Die” alongside Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton and Chloë Sevigny. It hits theaters June 14.
