Fans of the huge “Divergent” film franchise, based on the bestselling novels by Our Town’s Veronica Roth, can participate in a new virtual reality experience this weekend that has been created to promote the upcoming second film in the series, “The Divergent Series: Insurgent,” again starring Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Theo James.

The “Insurgent — Shatter Reality” 4-D event is taking place at Navy Pier from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The experience is set in the world of the movie and immerses users into the roles of “divergent” members of society who have been captured by Jeanine Matthews (played by Kate Winslet in the films) and her Erudite faction. Participants will be subjected to a series of mental “simulations” in order to discover the full extent of their divergence.

Users will experience two distinct, intensely gripping and realistic fearscapes — taking them to the scary heights of a crumbling Chicago skyscraper and the very intimidating fast-approaching locomotive.

The event is free to the public.
