Gillian Flynn’s HBO series ‘Utopia’ collapses as director quits

As the film version of her novel “Dark Places” hits theaters, another of Chicago author Gillian Flynn’s projects is hitting the rocks.

Deadline reports her HBO series “Utopia” fell apart after director David Fincher, who made the hit adaptation of Flynn’s “Gone Girl,” couldn’t reach a budget agreement with the pay-cable channel.

Flynn was writing the conspiracy thriller series, said to boast a cast including Rooney Mara, Colm Feore and Eric McCormack.

HBO may start over with a new director, the report said.
