Redford to play another famous journalist

Oscar winner Robert Redford will again portray a well-known journalist in a new film.

Redford is attached to play legendary CBS News anchor Dan Rather in “Truth,” a movie that will be top-rated screenwriter James Vanderbilt’s directorial debut. Vanderbilt is perhaps best-known for penning the first two films in “The Amazing Spider-Man” franchise.

Deadline.com reports Vanderbilt is adapting “Truth and Duty: The Press, The President, And The Privilege of Power,” written by Rather’s longtime producer, Mary Mapes. Cate Blanchett is also attached to the project to play Mapes.

The film will focus on the scandal that blew up after Rather reported on “60 Minutes II” that President George W. Bush had received preferential treatment that landed him in the National Guard to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War.

The scandal that followed — during President Bush’s re-election campaign in 2004 — led to Mapes being fired, and Rather’s repulation being seriously damaged.

As for Redford, he famously portrayed Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward in “All The President’s Men,” the 1976 film about the Watergate scandal.
