A stunning silver Rolls-Royce transported legendary singer Tony Bennett and pop superstar Lady Gaga to “The Today Show” earlier this morning where the duo announced the Sept. 23 release date for their jazz album, “Cheek to Cheek.”

It’s not the first time they’ve collaborated on vinyl, as Gaga and Bennett recorded “Lady Is a Tramp” for his 2011 album, “Duets: An American Classic.”

“He’s a legend and it’s a total honor to be singing with him,” Gaga gushed this morning, adding she’s been singing jazz since she was 13, “and Tony was the first person who knew that. … It’s so natural singing with Tony.”

“I kinda go by the ear, and she sings so wonderful. She is a great jazz singer. She improvises; every time we do a song it’s different,” said Bennett. “She’s the most natural [with jazz]. [Jazz] is America’s greatest music.”

Bennett heard her singing “Orange Colored Sky” at a recent fundraiser, loved it and asked her to do an album.

The album was recorded the old-fashioned way, in a studio with the musicians present. The album’s first single, “Anything Goes” is now available.

The album will be an homage to the Great American Songbook— George Gershwin, Cole Porter– with the two artists singing duets and solos.

In a 2011 interview with me, Bennett gushed about recording with Gaga: “Lady Gaga is the best performer I’ve ever run into. She’s completely creative and a bright, bright girl. She plays piano beautifully. The most professional, intuitive and spontaneous performer I’ve ever met. [Laughs] When she takes all her makeup off and wigs she’s just this sweet little Italian-American girl. But I think she’s going to become bigger than Elvis Presley.”

In honor of their new collaboration, Gaga asked Bennett, an acclaimed painter, to sketch a jazz trumpet for her. Bennett obliged by sketching Miles Davis’ iconic instrument, which Gaga promptly had tatooed on her upper right arm.

While Lady Gaga’s tour already made its stop in Chicago this summer, you can catch Bennett at the Ravinia Festival on August 16.

Hmmm… wonder if Gaga will make a surprise appearance at Bennett’s Ravinia gig? After all, production has begun on the new season for “Chicago Fire,” which just happens to star her soul mate Taylor Kinney. Could happen!
